Why do emailed compressed files need password to opn them?

I send zipped/compressed files. Often, but not always, the recipient says when he tries to open them he is asked for a password. I did not assign a password, and don't want the file password protected.
What's going on?

This happens when I use 7-ZIP or when I right-click on a file and Send To | Compressed folder. The files are Access MDB files

I think it is caused by the`utility that you use to zip. Here is a link showing that some of the utilities have this ability. It could be a malfunction in the utility. It has nothing to do with the OS, as far as I know.

Thanks Rich, but my problem is that even though I DON'T want to create a password-protected zip file, it happens anyway! When the recipient tries to open the file he gets asked for a password, even though I never assigned one.

Any ideas?

That is my point. You do not want it to be password protected, but it is. Vista does not make zips password protected, your utility does that.

So I think that is logical to assume that there is a problem, but its caused by a malfunction in the utility not Windows.

If you disagree and want to look into other areas, give me you thoughts and I will be very happy to help. As of now, however, I feel that it is the utilty and I know nothing about it.

I understand. 7-zip certainly could be the culprit and your point is well taken.

My concern developed when the same issue appeared when, instead of using 7-zip, I just right-clicked the file and used "SEND TO | COMPRESSED (ZIPPED) FOLDER", which I think is a standard Windows feature not associated with 7-zip.

Can you disable 7 zip for a while and see what happens?

We never came to a conclusion as to the source of your problem. This may not be appapplicable, but the more you know the quicker we can resolve the problem.
