What to do when..

You receive the message that your computer is infected and you can see the scan running behind the message box with the OK button? Is there a process to follow and a time frame before all the bad things take root??
I have received the message a few times and did the following with what appears to be positive results:

Do not click OK!! Try to close the window with the X box. Shut the computer down in normal fashion. If you cannot do a hard shutdown.Reboot into the safe mode with no networking and run your scans.Reboot normally update your antivirus and scan again.

I throught perhaps someone with a lot more knowledge could post a process to follow when you get this message.

Is there a way to set key words in the firewall to flag this event??

I agree do not click on OK, but I disagree on using the X to close the window. The clowns that write the malware and virus know all the tricks. I use the task manger to close the window.

In addition I leave the UAC on and only use a standard account. I feel that this is another, yet small layer of protection. It is more difficult for me to operate from the standard account, so maybe it is more difficult for a virus to infultrate into the system. Many may disagree, but those are my feelings.

richc46, Task manager is a good suggestion.I am surprised this post has not generated more responces. We all could avoid a lot of pain and blunt the assault of many virus threats by knowning what to do immediate upon attack. Some software genius needs to invent a radio bailout button to initiate swift action when attacked.
Anyway thanks.Comments on the firewall?

Coincidentally, richc46's suggestion to use Task Manager was the Cyber Security Awareness Tip of the Day I used in 2008. It is still the best recommendation. In addition, the linked article by Jesper Johansson is still applicable.

rickory,

Since you "have received the message a few times", I would suggest that your security software is perhaps not doing the job it should be doing. Rather than an immediate restart, instead disconnect from the internet as quickly as possible to prevent further downloads by the malware and scan with your antivirus and anti-malware software programs.

Corrine, I thank you so much. I am going to send copies of Tip of The Day to friends.

Thank you, too, for sharing your knowledge and expertise with all of us, here, at Vista Forums.

You are very welcome, Richard! (Be sure to check in at Freedomlist starting March 1 when the celebration starts for the 10th anniversary, particularly since you have been with us since shortly after updating FL to "real" forum software. lol )

My Computer

Thank You both for the tips. I'll check the link and use your suggestions. I am using the win firewall along with MSE. I scan with malwarebites, MRT, MSE and use ccleaner on a regular basis. I keep updated on windows & ie patches.I am not that much of a web explorer and recall the last virus attack was when logged into my yahoo page. Best as I can recall these attacks have happen twice over the last year. When it does I panic. Also the UAC and protected mode are always on. I would welcome any comments on how to improve security. I was using AVG free but found it too much of a resource hog.Same thing for McA which I had free from my isp.Thank You again. This is a very informative well managed forum.

I don't blame you for that feeling of panic. After all, a rogue is attempting to infiltrate your personal property uninvited! Based on your computer security -- which appears to be quite complete (except for missing my favorite WinPatrol), I would guess it was an infected advertisement on the Yahoo page.
