What is causing slow boot?

Hello,

I'm Dutch and my English is not so good. Sorry for that.

This is my problem:

I have a notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit on it. The problem is that my boot is take a lot of time. First I get the BIOS screen with the Dell logo that is taking about 3 seconds (so that is good). But the loading bar is taking a lot of time. It is going from left to right for 13 times (This is not normal I think). After that, my screen is going blank for about 10 seconds and then I get a black screen with mouse cursor for about 10 seconds and then again a blank screen for 10 seconds (So a total of 30 seconds, which also not normal). After that I get the vista logo with the sound and the welcome screen, which is taking a long time (for about 25 seconds). After that I get a blank screen for 20 seconds and then the desktop appears and from now on everything is running fine. So my question is: WHAT is causing this slow boot!!!

I have already read the tutorial 'How to Speed Up Vista Boot Time' and did everyting they said. My startup programs are Kaspersky Internet Security and MSN Messenger. I have enabled superfetch and prefetch and set the registry value on 3. What else can I do to decrease the boot time?

Hello OUTLAW,

The slow boot in the beginning is most certainly caused by the low memory but as I read your specs of how much memory you have. It shocks me that you're having issues. I'm running 4GB on my 32bit premium and it's running flawlessly.

I do believe that you're running 32bit Operating system, maybe you meant that your processor can hold a 64bit Operating system but Home premium is a 32bit operating system. You should have no problem.

I would check again how much memory you're running, if you're running anything less than 2GB you need an upgrade.

Visca can run slow for many reasons such as: too many programs starting up, a virus or spyware, a defective memory stick, hard drive corruption or near to be full, incompatible or outdated video driver, etc.

start by disabling all the startup items by performing a clean boot.

also after the dell post screen press F8 and boot into safe mode, check if it takes as long.

But I really have Vista Home Premium 64-bit. My notebook is using 850mb of memory and have 1338mb in cache and 50mb available.

I did a clean boot and that didn't help. But the startup programs are Kaspersky and MSN and that's all. I Already have scanned my computer with ad-aware and kaspersky. I have 67gb of free space on my hard drive and all my drivers are up to date. I boot my laptop in safe mode and it boots within 2 minutes. But when I boot normal it takes about 4 minutes.

But what do you mean with defective memory stick?

Hi, am having the similar problem, I am not getting the black screen but it is too long for the bar to loading. As I have found this problem after installation of the SP1, before that it was 10 something secs but now increased to around 20 secs. Not many programs loading during the startup.

My computer is using vista ultimate x64 and the brand new hardwares which was bought 5-6 days before. and the specs are on my profile page.

Hi people,

Iwas just checking on the performance monitor thing and I saw this under "performance issues" and it says that this 'cleanmgr.exe' thing is making the comp start up time to be a tad slower. I choosed for remove from list, but that wasn't my intention. How can I solve this problem.
