What happens if you click on a link given by any kind of spam?

This is something I really want to know more about. Links given by phising scam and forum spambots are said to either give viruses or display things you wish you haden't seen.

I haven't clicked on the links before, but I imagine that if I did it would either display an unclosable-till-it-finish window containing adult content or my AVG would come up detecting a virus or malware or something.

Has anyone ever had any experiance with this or does anyone know lots about it? I posted this in another forum before, but since this forum specializes in all tech, I feel as if this is where I'll get the best information :).

Thank you for everything you've done for me in the past years. I'm sorry that games require much more than you're capable of, but you'll never be forgotten as my first personal computer <3
Those links can give you virus or even worse. Never click on them the best solution is to use
alt cntrl delete to bring up task manager and close it that way.
