Welcome screen problem

I have a HP Pavilion DV 9000 Entertainment PC w/windows vista ultimate 64x. I have had a problem with booting into the welcome screen. The computer goes grey and it is on and running, but nothing appears on the screen. I can sign into safemode, which I have done some of my own diagnostics to check if there was a download problem of some sort. It does show a video hardware error reported and then an unexpected shutdown occured on 11/11 and there is also
NVIDIA Graphics Driver has stopped working properly. I reset computer to an earlier timeframe, I did a Last known good configeration. None of this helped I called HP and got some very poor help, they said I needed a BIOS download which they directed me to the download on HP website, long story short it was the incorrect Bios download (my computer shutdown as soon as the download happened) I called HP back they gave me another download for a different BIOS, that was incorrect also, I am really afraid at this point to deal with HP. Does anyone know the cause of this problem, or any ideas? I do have a warrenty with HP but I have no clue what the tech's do there if they give you bad information, Hope someone can help

It sounds like either a hardware or BIOS problem. Did you add any hardware to your system? Try disconnecting any unnecessary hardware from your machine before booting. You can also try finding the right BIOS file yourself, by going to the HP site and looking in the downloads section.

Hi Queenbee, I have to agree with Jonathan. DV9 series is renowned for this & you did indicate in your post you were getting a "NVidea graphics driver has stopped working" notification
If you go to this link 24/7 Online support for HP's Home and Home Office Products - HP Customer Care (New Zealand - English) enter your full model numer dv9????etc. and download the latest drivers (save them) you may have to do it on a friends computer & transfer them to a flash drive if you cant use your own.
You said you can boot into safe mode uninstall your Nvidea drivers then restart your computer into safe mode and install your Chipset driver first and then restart again.
Then install your Graphics driver and restart again & hopefully it should fire up into Windows properly this time.
PS when you use the installers right click on them & select Run as Administrator.
I hope this is of some help, best wishes

Edit; Sorry forgot to mention it is highly recommended to disable your antvirus/malware protection when installing drivers

When I got my computer with Vista x64 Home Premium installed, there was screen activity when I booted up i.e. the usual stuff showing the memory check, disk listing, etc. I upgraded to Ultimate...no problem. When I updated with Microsoft's updates (More than one with the date 11/19/2009), the data stream info before the Windows Welcome screen disappeared. Microsoft apparently has denied being the problem & blames some other unknown source for the problem. It would seem extremely unlikely that we who have many different computers with varied hardware would all have a similar problem if it was not Microsoft, who seems to be the common factor, who somehow caused the problem...maybe it was deliberate so that we cannot see anything on the screen so we cannot get to the cmos information...without being able to see this data stream, I defy anyone to get to your cmos.
Anyway, I have given up for now...would definitely appreciate if someone can figure this out.
