WD SES Driver for Vista

Just got a cool new 2T Bit Western Digital My Book Essential External Hard drive and I ran the inital software which came with the unit and upgraded the firmware and software from the WD web site but my Device Manager says the SES driver is not loaded and going to WD they say this unit is compatible with Windows Vista loaded drivers and they don't provide any drivers from their site. Looking at my Windows Explorer I do not see the WD drive nor the Virtual CD drive WD says I should also have. I am getting a code 31 error from my Device Manager and the Windows Update says I have the correct and current SES driver for this unit. Looking at the software interface (WD Smart Ware) on my desk top I can not access the unit either. I'm at a loss as what to do next. Any idea's????

Thanks for trying but so far no satisfaction. I have used the system file checker command many times and get the response that it could not fix all the problems it found. I do not have a file in the system 32 file folder that lists WD Extra or any mention of WD at all in the folder. I have deleted all references of the WD unit to see if I just needed to reload all relevent software and hardware but I get the same result each time. In my device manager the unit is listed but says the unit will not work with an error code 31. I have read extensively in the MicroSoft knowledge base and have not come up with any satifactory solution. When I search for different ways of asking about my problems I keep getting the same references to read and I find this unproductive. I scoured the WD web site and have found no helpful information. My windows explorer does not list that the My Book unit is pluged in so I can't find it anywhere to try to access any file located on it that might help. I haven't tried to load the soft ware and device on another machine yet, so I'm not sure that the unit itself may be defective or not that is the next thing I'll try. I'll let you know if that fails and in the mean time if anyone has any questions I'm game.
