Waiting for about:blank...

Hi all!

I have been experiencing this problem with my IE8 browser. Each time I go to a new page or click the back button, my browser hangs on a blank page for a few seconds or sometimes up to a minute. During this time, the status bar reads "Waiting for about:blank". This is about to drive me looney! However, when I use IE8 (no add-ons), I do not have this problem. I have gone into manage add-ons and disabled/enabled each add-on one by one and I cannot seem to find the one(s) affecting my browser. Even when I disable ALL of them manually so that I have no add-ons working, my browser still hangs on about:blank. It is only when I use IE8 (no add-ons) that my browser doesn't hang. Could there possibly be any hidden add-ons that I can't see?

I am currently using Malwarebytes and I have scanned my computer thoroughly with a clean report each time.

Any help or advice on how to remove this about:blank problem would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance! ;)
Gina

Try a different browser and see if it goes away. I'd suggest Chromium win32 zip since you don't need to install it. I seem to remember that "waiting on about blank" thing happening once, but it wasn't IE since I don't use IE. I think it was a version of chrome. It went away before I really figured out what it was. You may have a bad extension or addon.

You can download the latest chromium nightly .zip file here:
Index of /f/chromium/snapshots/chromium-rel-xp

They seem to be cleaner than the ones with the installer.

I'm so sorry! I forgot to list that I do use Microsoft Security Essentials, also. That and Malwarebytes are the only two programs that I use.

Thanks for your reply!

Prevention Is The Solution

If you are worried about having About:Blank on your PC, you should watch out for certain factors. A major thing that you might notice would be the system running very slow. Basically, the virtual memory of your system allows it to operate as a platform for various programs to run. Every system has its own share of virtual memory space, and the more virtual memory you assign to it, the slower would the system respond.
If About:Blank has become a part of the system, it will feed on the virtual memory, keeping very little room for the various programs to function properly. An excellent way of identifying if the PC is infected with About:Blank is to check the Processes tab in the Windows Task Manager. If you are not running any programs at present but the CPU usage is almost 80% or even more, there are chances that your system has been infected with About:Blank or any of its counterparts that have turned into the primary occupant of your system.

Hmmm.......my CPU usage is only ~8-14% and I currently have 3 programs open (IE8 no add-ons included) so I have no idea what is going on with my computer. I am also having problems with my Vista x64 so that may be contributing to my browser problem. I tried to do the "Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically" and a couple of other Vista FixIt solutions from Microsoft and each time I would try to download the FixIt, I would get an error saying "This troubleshooter doesn't apply to this computer". It seems to identify my OS as either XP or Win7. I've had a couple of other programs misidentify my OS also. But that's another topic for a different thread category! Lol.

Thanks for your help!

I take it the XP indicates it's for Windows XP or later as opposed to builds for Linux.
I'm running build 84892 on Windows7 right now. It's wicked snappy and everything works afaict. The good thing about the portables is you just delete the Chromium folders and it's gone. The Chromium settings folder is kept in AppData\Local under the user name folder. Also only a few extensions are needed to do all you need to do. Bookmark sync uses the same account on Google as Chrome does. You can use LastPass on both Chromium and Firefox to sync your passwords etc.. very fast off the disk. No waiting for 20 seconds for FF to load.

Thanks for all your help. I'm currently running a couple of different "one time" scanners from Microsoft (i.e. Microsoft Safety Scanner and Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool) to see if they pick up anything. Hopefully I'll nip this thing in the bud soon. :D

Thanks again!

This is what I do not understand. You say when you remove the add ons you do not have the problem. So if you put them back one by one, you should be able to figure out the cause.

I honestly don't understand it either. I have even disabled the accelerators and the search provider (Google) in addition to the add-ons and the about:blank continues to appear. I don't have the about:blank problem that I have read about that others are experiencing such as it taking full control of their browser and homepage by sending them to multiple random sites and resetting their homepage. Mine just hangs on a blank page for several seconds before it opens a new page/tab or when I hit the back button to return to a previous page.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is saying that I do in fact have 1 infected file, but it is not yet finished scanning so I can't see what it is. I guess we'll find out soon

Ok. That sounds great. I'll let you know what the infection is as soon as it finishes scanning.

I did have a massive virus on my laptop in Jan. and had to take it to the computer doctor to have it fixed. I was looking on Google images at hair bow ideas for my daughter and clicked on a picture with a bad link. As soon as the picture popped up, it instantly sent me to that fake "your computer is infected, scanning your computer now" website. That was totally my fault though because Malwarebytes picked it up immediately and tried to remove the virus/restart my computer and I minimized Malwarebytes because I wanted to save a Word doc that I had been working on before it restarted. As soon as I minimized Malwarebytes, BSOD popped up and I was unable to boot my computer after that, even in safe mode. But my computer has been acting sketchy ever since then.

This event is generated when a logon session is created. It is generated on the computer that was accessed.
The subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.
The logon type field indicates the kind of logon that occurred. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).
The New Logon fields indicate the account for whom the new logon was created, i.e. the account that was logged on.
The network fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.
The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Logon GUID is a unique identifier that can be used to correlate this event with a KDC event.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
- Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
- Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.
