have a desktop computer upstairs,which I don't use. I also have a modem connected to it and have a WIRELESS router so I use my laptop downstairs but the signal is not good. how could I make the signal stronger can I unplug the main computer, and have my WIRELESS router downstairs If so how do I go about it cheers x

The router has to be where the modem is. If you have a phone outlet downstairs, you can move modem and router to there. But if the laptop is close to the outlet, you may be even better off to attach it with an ethernet cable directly to the modem and skip the router. An ethernet cable can be quite long (100 meters max.).

Since you said that the upstairs computer is not being used, I see no harm disconnecting it. You can still use the upstairs computer locally, but will not be able to connect to the internet.

If you chose to attach the laptop downstairs directly to the modem with an ethernet cable, you would avoid to have to reinstall the router from the laptop. That is the easiest solution.

If that is not possible and you need the router (e.g. because you do not want to run ethernet cables thru the house or if you want to use the laptop in different places in the downstairs), use the installation disk that came with the router. But during the router setup, the laptop has to be physically attached to the router (via ethernet cable). If you are lucky, the router may still operate from the upstairs installation. So try that first in case you need to use it.
