VISTA x64 questions...

OK, so I've just installed 64 bit vista the other day, I've never used 64 bit, so this might be common but I don't kno..

When I go into the C: Drive.. it shows program files.. and then it also shows a Program Files (x86) folder.. why do I have both, and one is 32 bit.

Whats it for, what should I use it for. or do the things you try and install that are 32 bit go in there, and the others go in the normal file??

Please let me kno what the deal is with that.

One last question, I just got a new system built.. and now I wanna take the HD from my old system, add it to my new one.. and move everything over, is it just that simple. plug it in.. let my computer see it. open and drag everything. or is there ways to do it. Like I don't wanna just drag everything or I'd have 2 of everything. and it would take forever to do it all folder at a time.

So what should I do. Open my Music and drag it all into My music new system. so the folder stays and stuff inside get transfered. or what?

whats the best way to just get all my programs, and all my files over..
Should I transfer over all the install files.. or should I redownload and reinstall all the stuff I need online.. to make sure i get 64 bit ones if available..?? Let me kno please!! I'm going to do it tonight.. k thanks

Hi Cory

The Program Files folder is where the 64bit programs will install their regular program files, the program files (x86) is where the 32bit programs will install theirs. Some programs will actually install in Both folders, depending on how they're setup but that's not too often. You'll see 2 Win Media Players because both a 32bit and 64bit version are present, and other Windows program folders like Defender, Collaboration, Mail, NT and others all have folders in both as well even tho they don't have 2 version like WMP does.

It's easy to add your old drive to the new system, just install it as usual and it'll be detected and installed like normal.
I have a little reg file for you that adds 2 more options into your right click context menu, Add to Folder & Copy to Folder. These are indespensible commands that should be there to start but aren't. Once you use them you'll understand why many 100's of us have this tweak installed...
Don't drag stuff, that's sketchy at times. After installing the attached reg file, just use ctrl+a to select all, then right click on ay one of the selected files and choose either "Copy to folder" or "Move to folder" and then nav to the folder you want them to go too.
Extract the attached zipped file to your desktop and dbl-click to install it, you'll never regret this one, it's the first thing I reinstall after I reinstall...

Also, to eliminate future CODEC issues, install the Vista Codec Pack from Shark007.
It's a compilation of every 64bit compatible codec that you'll need, including ffdshow and FLAC support. It's updated regularly and is a godsend for us 64bit'rs.
There is also a 64bit Tool pack on there that's fantastic as well.

Ya, I'm not sure if what I have is for 32 or 64.. but it's workin pretty good on my new system so far, I used to have it on my 32bit machine.. and I just redownloaded it last night when tryin to watch some episodes of Entourage.. they wouldn't work.. so I got my old vista Codec v459 and installed that.. it's workin so far.. but that might not be the best possible one.. should I download that one your talking about v466??? or should I be good with what I have

Don't worry it because Vista Ultimate puts 32 bit programs in Program Files (x86) and 64 bit programs in Program files

What I have done with my old machine is got it connected through my router, decided to share whole drive, enabled remote desktop so when I turn it on I can see it as network drive. See picture below

I use it simply to back all my files. Once connected, Vista will detect it and you will be able to back up your files to it no problems.
You will not need to assign any IP addresses because router will do that for you. All you need to do is enable sharing of folders you want to use, enable remote desktop and make sure that you put logging password in, because remote desktop will not work without password for some reason.... Also you will need to know full computer name as well
Top Rig is dual boot 500Gb XP and 500Gb Vista. Basically I put all my important files on all 3 hard drives. Vista is commonly used for net, games, XP is a back up and machine on the floor is back up of the back up. See how my router ( on the left behind the monitor has 4 lights )2 to on the right are for two computers connected via Ethernet.

ya that makes perfect sense... I actually just ended up throwing my old HD in this new system and transfered everything I wanted to move. I transfered all the what 4 or 5 thousand songs, all my music and my pics n vids.. and all the install files.. like all the programs I installed on old machine. I saved the install file, and moved it over, then installed everything on new system, like NOD32, Nero Premium, DVD decrypter and shrink. and Coretemp, Speedfan, Rivatuner, CPU-Z all those nice and fast.. it was pretty good actually, went perfectly fine. I coulnd't be more happy with my new system. Well I could be more happy, I could have a better videocard, I could have Dual monitors.. thats commin soon i think tho..

and i COULD have got my RAM today, but no, UPS sucks ass and they shipped it late and they recieved my RAM from cali about 25 minutes after there morning Sort happens. so i missed it, and now have to wait over the weekend, the long weekend. if I don't get it tuesday i'm going to hurt someone. I got myself some new ram and I'm exited to see how everything runs with 4GB instead of 2 of PNY crap RAM, and I wanna see what the 4GB does for my 3Dmark06 score vs the 2GB's.

so whats better in 64.. to use the 32 bit WMP like default.. or to switch it to the 64 bit version.. or does it not really matter all that much??? I have not had any problems so far... and I have the Vista Codec v459.. you recommend 465.. so mines not that old.. and I can run anything I throw at it.. even 3GP video's.. so i think I'm good for now in that area.. what ya say?

I wanted to do the same but my video card has covered 2 SATA port, I was left with 2 spare one. I didn't have to buy PCI SATA controller so I optioned to use old rig as described above
