Vista won't start after update

Hi guys. Last night I installed some updates from Microsoft. After restart the computer displayed the welcome screen but not the login one. I waited for about an hour waiting for Vista to load but it didnt. I tried to repair it with the installation cd but I get the message that there is nothing to repair. Also, I cannot boot in safe mode and I cannot run system restore, i.e., its been runing for almost an hour with no result. I dont know what to do anymore. Please help me.

I also had this problem about 2 days ago, realising it happened after installing a vista update from Windows Update.

The problem i had was that windows would load, but after logging in, the CPU usage would be 100%, and would stay like this even if i left it overnight!

i finally realised it was an update causing the problem,after 2 whole days of testing each boot service and program hehehe. i overcame this by uninstalling the update and i am now quite reluctant to reinstall the update!

Hi ,

You should be able to get to system restore using the installation dvd

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista

The repair console might even pick something up. I've had a problem several months ago like this, and the repair console's summary stated it was a Windows update causing the problem, and it fixed it for me.

Hi there,

I've been having the same problem the past couple of days on a Toshiba laptop, it just won't boot at all into Vista. Most of the time the screen is black and has the Microsoft bar with the green lines scrolling across it.

I have managed to get it to start in safe mode a couple of times, but usually it just keeps trying to restart or hangs.

When in safe mode I found a couple of updates that were installed not long before it started playing up and I uninstalled them. It hasn't made any difference.

I made a recovery disc thanks to the tutorial on this great site but it wasn't able to repair and system restore won't work either, I have tried going back to a few different points prior to the updates.

A couple of error messages appeared simultaneously when it appeared as tho it may boot up to the desktop normally, these were:

"Explorer.exe - Application error"
The instruction at 076914ce6 referenced memory at 0xfffffffe4, the memory could not be written. Click ok to terminate.

and:

"Location is not available"
C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

Sorry this is so long but I understand that the more information that is available the more likely that someone may have a clue as to how to resolve it.

Hi Elisabeta11 and caldane69, welcome to the board.

I have installed all the recommended updates via auto update which never causing such serious problems. If uninstalling the updates wouldn't help, you may look at it in possible hardware malfunction. It would be helpful in diagnostic if you post the specs of the computer.

As for caldane69, if you are unable to system recover to factory condition in safe mode, I would consider the HDD is out or bad connections resulting in data accessing problems. The damage may be the result of simply carrying your open laptop around with one hand. Also, Toshiba laptop is know to have overheat problem.

Thanks for the welcome and your interest.

Sorry, do you mean posting the specs on here or in my profile? Hopefully I can get the information out of the laptop.

I haven't tried restoring to factory settings yet but it's looking as tho I'll have to.

I have since tried restoring to some earlier restore points than before and each time it fails.

The error messages have been:

System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. (0x80070570)

System restore failed....as above. Access is denied (0x80070005)

Hi Dave,
If you don't have the specs in hand, just post the model of your laptop. We can easily locate the specs most of the time.
If it is not the first time you have to restore, that means it is very likely to be hardware problems.
Next thing you may try is to borrow a Vista OS DVD from a friend and see if it will repair or install. If not, try a new drive. If still wouldn't do it, try to return it or exchange for another if warranty is still good.

Thanks again, I can't get the laptop to start in safe mode at all now. I have limited details from the machine from my network pc. It's a Toshiba PSLB0-08L022, Intel Core Duo 2 CPU T5750 @ 2.00 GHZ, 2048MB RAM, Vista Home Premium SP1.

This is the first time we've had to run restore, the laptop is less than 3 months old.

I've had another couple of different errors when attempting 2 more system restore points.

They were:
Cannot create a file that already exists (0x800700B7), and

The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)

I also wrote down the details from the startup repair failure.

They are:

Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

It's been on a continual loop so the startup repair just keeps trying and failing. When this happens I notice the only number to change in the report is the value at sig 04. This has also appeared as 196611 and 262148.

I found a windows update log while using the c prompt window, managed to save it as a notepad file. If I can somehow get it off the laptop as a file would that be any help on here?
