Vista won't let me rename folder

When I go to C:\Program files\Common files\Nero and try to rename the Nero folder to Nero_2, I get "you must have permission to perform this action". I've tried logging into my Administrator account to do the same thing, but still get the same message.
Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Do you have InCD running? Is any Nero service running out of that folder? If something has it in use it's not going to let you rename it while it's running. Try booting into Safe Mode.

Hi, No I don't have "inCD" installed, I didn't install it because on a previous version of Nero and on another computer it would cause the operating system to hang.
I know the not being able to rename a folder has something to do with Vista itself, it's not a software problem. And from what I've googled, it is caused by one of the Windows updates. The suggestions I've read about fixing the problem, however, involve messing with the registry, which I'd rather not try. I was hoping someone might have an easy solution to the problem.

If you know what update messed it up, perhaps you can back it off? Or was it too long ago?

Also it might not hurt to do a Malwarebytes scan. I had a little registry goblin on my system that wouldn't let me delete files in Explorer even with "delete on next boot" utilities. I ran Malwarebytes and it took it right off.

From what I've googled, it seems the problem is caused by a Windows update. I can't see it listed in Windows Updates on my computer. I've also tried someone's link on "how to take ownership of a folder", but that didn't work either.
I discovered this problem when I wrote to the Nero tech support people about a problem with the software and their suggestion was to rename the Nero folder, run the general clean tool, reinstall Nero and then delete the renamed folder.
I explained to them that I couldn't rename the folder even though I have an Administrator's account as well as my own user account on my computer. Their response to me was to "create an administrator's account" as this was the cause of my not being able to rename the folder. I think they're not all that bright at Nero, as they obviously didn't understand that I already had that account created.
Anyway, I guess I give up. Perhaps Microsoft will come up with a fix in one of their future updates, as there seem to be a lot of people with the same problem. Only I can't seem to find a solution to the problem.

In vista you are never an Administrator unless you do the following:
open cmd, Make sure you select, 'Run as administrator'
type the following:

1. Net user administrator compuwhiz93 ( here the password is my name , u can puy whtever u want)
2. Net user administrator /active:yes

Then log off and log-in using the new account, the n you will be able yo rename the file (or atleast i hope so :D).

Hi, That's what I did about a year ago, in order to remove Norton. I created an Administrator's account using the method you suggest, but even when I logged into the Administrator's account I was still unable to rename the folder.
I did find a solution, however, that seems to solve the problem, at least on my computer. I disabled the UAC (Control Panel, type UAC in the search box and uncheck the User Account Control) and then I was able to rename the folder. Once I'd renamed the folder, I activated the UAC again.
I don't know why I didn't come across this solution when I googled "unable to rename folder in Vista". Anyway, thanks for all your help, and at least now the problem is resolved.
The Nero tech support's info on how to fix the problem I'm having with Nero, didn't solve the problem with the software. So much for their ability to solve a problem.

I don't know what "rep power" is, or if I was able to increase it.

your ''Rep Power'' will increase as others give you ''Rep+'', it will also slightly rise with your post count...

You were very lucky (!) because I've had my UAC turned off for a year, and I still get this problem occasionally. It's obviously a quirk (corruption of some type) of Vista's, because it's relatively common. I think I've pretty much tried everything, and nothing helps, except that if I shut down and reboot once or twice and continue to use the computer, I notice that eventually the problem resolves itself somehow, and I can then go back and rename or move or delete the file.

Sometimes Explorer won't let go of things. That's why often you do something to files in a folder with a Shell Extension, then when you try to delete the folder, you get access denied or files are in use etc..

You can try a utility like Lock Hunter or see this tutorial how to kill Explorer and restart it without logging off or rebooting:

Also I wrote a small utility called UpdateEnv that can sometimes encourage a registry setting or explorer setting to be flushed. On occasion if you hit it 3 or 4 times you can avoid logging off to update Explorer.
