Vista with XP?

hey all,

i got a vista desktop and work laptop, i want to be able to transfer documents between the 2 over the wireless network i got,

the issue i have is that my laptop is part of the WORK DOMAIN and i can not change it to WORKGROUP like vista wants me to so i can connect to it.

it is really get a pain in the bum between the XP on the Laptop and Vista on the Desktop.

i also have a printer hooked up to the Router to be able to print off things, i can access it through the XP on the laptop either,

please help,

OK, I need some clarification.


  1. Is the laptop Vista or XP?
  2. With the printer connected via Ethernet to the router, you *can* or *can not* connect to it via XP?

Go to command prompt on laptop and type
Start \\Desktop-name-here\c$
to connect to the C drive. For D drive it would be D$

Or from the computer do the same except
start \\laptop-name\c$

Then just drag and drop

The (driveletter)$ for eg C$ (C:\) is an admin share. You will need admin Credentials.

This connection IS NOT secure. Although if you do it on a secure network you should be ok.

the Laptop is XP with a company's domain name

the Desktop is VISTA business pro - not connected to the company's domain.

i got the printer figured out.
