I've had a refurbished Acer Aspire 3690 with Vista Home basic for about 3 months now and I'm heavy on the usage of it. (it's my life line, so it has everything on it). I've had a bunch of little problems with it freezing or not shutting down but i figured those were minor. I, like the dumb one i am, did a hard reboot to fix the problem. (I'm aware now after joining this forum and reeading posts that my error made things worse) A couple of days ago when loading up on my user account it froze in the middle of loading, so i did a hard reboot and started it in safe mode and removed all extra programs that I could just get again. I then fiddled around with the startup and services. I have a basic knowledge of computers, enough to get me by when something goes wrong but it seemed to work when i brought it up again but after about 15 min it stopped responding and i did another hard reboot (yes I know I'm an idiot for not knowing, but what's a better way to do it, when it freezes?) and after that i got a screen that told me my system had failed to start properly and would look for a solution, it didn't find one. I finally figured out how to get it to use my recovery disc and it's loading now. But my question(s) is What most likely caused it to crash like that and How can I prevent it from happening again? Thanks if there is no real answer, no problem, but Vista is not very friendly.

Your hardware is very old. Are you sure all the drivers are Vista certified?

yes I had the memory upgraded (I don't knbow how much at this moment) and a dual core installed. I had everything upgraded on the hardware side and my drivers are all upgraded. I got it from a private computer group who wrote everything about it down for me. unfortunately I don't have access to that info right now.
Positive they are all vista certified.
