Vista Ultimate x64 Problem

The other day i went to go restart my computer, and everything was going as normal (bios asked for pw, vista loaded) but right before the Login screen came up for me to log in on my username (im the only user on my computer) the screen turns black, but i can still see/move my mouse.

I tried several things at this point; Ctrl+shift+esc/ctrl+alt+delete, alt+f4, alt+tab, windows key+D, windows key+E and nothing came up, still just sat at my mouse with the black screen.

Next thing i tried was safe mode. Everything seemed to be booting up as normal in safemode, but before windows loaded and went to the login screen or the desktop (i didnt get to login), it goes black again and i can only see my mouse with the same attributes as before. I tried this with all available safe modes (with cmd prompt/networking), and then i proceeded to try to boot using the last known good configuration, still no avail. I ran the memory diagnostic tool during windows boot and had it run 5 times, on the more advanced scan. nothing seemed to have gone wrong at all during that.

I just spent some time looking around for a Vista Recovery x64 cd that i could burn with one of my other computers and boot from that to see what i can do, but it seems like there's no such thing available at the moment. Unfortunatly, i cannot find my vista cd, so i'm kinda bummed out about this. If anyone has any sort of useful information, or maybe they have experienced this before, any insight on what the problem is would be more than appreciated, thanks a lot!

BTW, here's my computer specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
ATI x1950XT
2g PC6400 DDR2
600w power supply (might be more, i forgot)
ASUS motherboard

Oh yea, another thing to note that might be helpful, i have been using my vista system for about 8+ months now. When i first installed vista on my machine, had some serious issues, but a quick bios flash/update made things work flawlessly. I haven't had any other issues since, and i never came across any issues like this before in my years in computer repair. Thanks for the replies, hopefully i can get this machine back up and running again.

Welcome to Vista x64 Forums.

I do not know if this will work on the 64 bit Vista, but you can download this ISO image below to create a Recovery CD/DVD. Just copy it to a CD or DVD to be able to use it to boot with.

Boot this DVD, and see if running a Startup Repair can fix your problem for you.

Unfortunatly i've already investigated that, and it only works with 32bit versions. They are working on a 64 bit version though (have been since Jan 08) that will hopefully solve my issue. Thanks for trying to help though

My vista had been working fine. One day I let it install a couple of MS updates. The PC was shutting down like normal (installing updates please wait). Then it powered off. I powered it back on and all hell broke loose:
Windows failed to boot because of a missing or corrupt winload.exe
Sata Drives were mixed
Could not detect my DVD drive Drive.
I finally had to reset BIOS jumper. That fixed the DVD.Then Finally was able to run a repair start up. Then all was ok. What a fiasco that the BIOS decided to mess up.

I hope they come out with one soon for you. Do you have a friend that has a x64 bit Vista installation DVD? You can use their DVD to repair your Vista.

It seems like that's pretty much my only option for the time being - either wait for someone to release the 64bit recovery iso or find someone that had vista x64 i can borrow . i sure as hell don't have the money to pay for a new copy, so i guess i'm going to have to settle with Knoppix live for the time being :'(

I believe you should be able to order yourself another copy of the 64 bit Vista installation DVD for just a $10 shipping and handling fee from Microsoft. You can see how to here. You will just use your current product key number for it.

I am guessing that he only had a restore partition originally and that he did not make a restore DVD--assuming that option was available..

I hope that's not the case Znod. I do not think you can order a copy of the Vista installation DVD from Microsoft in that case. theonlyepi would have to order the replacement Vista DVD from the OEM instead.

Sorry to say, but i didn't create a restore partition during my initial installation, and i didn't create a recovery dvd either. When i was first installing vista, i had a strong feeling that i wasn't going to be using it for very long due to all the flack everyone's been giving it. I never got around to makeing a recovery partition either, but if i can get my windows system back up and running again sometime soon, i'll definatly do that this time around, lol.
