Vista Startup Problem

Hi all,
I'm trying to fix a Vista Home Basic Laptop. Its quite an annoying problem, every now and again when it starts up it goes as far as the loading screen (green dots moving across the screen) and just stays on this screen. When I restart it then it asks if I want to run start up repair. When i run this it asks if I want to run system restore which ive done a couple of times now, once it finishes everything seems fine and the system starts up again as normal. I've rebooted it a few times to check if its working properly, and usually its fine for a few attempts, and then I'm back to square one again.

I can't figure it out, there has been no new hardware changes, no new software changes. Norton Internet Security was reporting a problem with Auto-Protect, I decided to uninstall this to see if that was the problem with start up but with that gone I was having the exact same problem. Its gettin quite frustrating at this stage, and I've looked around but can't find any solutions.

Anyone got any ideas?
System specs are, Vista Home Basic Service Pack 1, 2GB Ram, Dual Core Pentium @1.87Ghz
