Vista startup problem

The computer(hp m9150f) just won't start up. I've tried running CHKDSK and startup repair but I keep getting an error message saying that it was unable to fix it. Let me just say that the computer with the problem is not mine but my family's. I rarely use it, so I don't know what they might have done to it. They told me they had some important files inside the computer so they don't want me to do an hp system restore before they saved the files. So, what I've came up with is to do a vista upgrade first, so then they'd have access to their files. Then I would use the hp system restore to restore everything back to the normal. Can anybody here tell me if this would work and also if there's any other way to fix it? I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks. And sorry if I sound like a noob.

Hello Syler!

Welcome to Vista forums!

My HP "Recovery Center" has an option to save files before it continues to "Recover"

The first option is to do a http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

If that doesn't work then continue on with the "Recovery".

With the machine off, press the power button and start tapping the F11 key
if it doesn't go to the "Recovery Center" the first try, try again.

Keep us informed!

Later  Red

Thanks for the help mate. I backed up the files and did a system restore. The only problem now is with the backup file. When I try to open a file(ex: word), I get an error message saying that I do not have access privilege to open it. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Hello Bare Foot Kid,

I put the files in to a usb stick and from there on I tried reading them from the stick. Strangely enough, it worked. Now, after the recovery, when I reinstall the programs that I regularly use (i.e. Office, Adobe), midway during installation, it freezes. I tried the recovery again, but everytime I get the same results. I began to suspect a hard drive failure so I went to maxtor's website to download SeaTools for DOS. I ran the test on both drives. Results: the primary drive failed and and secondary drive passed. Since my computer is still under warranty, I'm going to contact HP to get them to send me a new one. Is there anything else I can do besides that?
