Vista startup after problems

Having brought my new PC of spec:

Core 2 Quad Q6600
nvidia 8600GT
8GB DDR2 RAM
500GB SATA2 HD

with windows vista ultimate x64 and some other programs like anti virus pre installed. I started to have problems after a few days with the display driver nvlddmkm.sys and blue screen error IRQL not_less_than_or_equal_to. After trying many things like the new nvida drivers i gave up and used system restore to just after Vista was installed and before the drivers were installed.

I was wondering if people could point me in the right direction so to avoid these apparently common problems in the future. Is there any updates or dowloads that should be obtained first. i was thinking the most recent nvida driver as the first thing to do. Thanks

The nvlddmkm bsod has been a problem for quite some time now. There are many large threads on it, (i.e. Nvlddmkm Stopped responding is getting VERY OLD... - nV News Forums), discussing it, but unfortunately no 'one solution fixes all' yet. It seems the combination of vista + 8xxx nvidia along with memory hogging games, over clocked video card and/or overclocked mb/memory cause it the most. The frequency of occurrances also varies from forceware driver to driver. Currently I'm using the 174.51 with a modified .inf file since I have vista x64. I have yet to experince it with these drivers, but I haven't oc'd much at all either (635/1458/2016 and cpu 3.4). Some have reported it with win xp but it mostly seems to be a vista/nvidia problem.

As for preinstalled anti-virus, I would get rid of it and get Avast or AVG. Both are good and both are free.

Thanks for the help guys ive just installed AVG as my anti virus. I found the windows update KB929777 which is ment to help cure the display driver problem. Im going to install this before I think about getting the nvidia driver. At the moment all is well.
