Solved Vista SP2 Changed Sound Quality

I noticed a few days ago I only had SP1 installed for my x64 bit HP Pavilion Laptop. A little surprised by this, I decided I'd go ahead and install SP2.

I'm a bit of a music listener, and I've been listening to music on this laptop everyday for over 2 years now. The default settings were just right for me and worked really well with my music. However, after installing SP2, I noticed an IDT Audio icon in the taskbar. I never had that there before - it apparently had some settings for some audio quality enhancer or something. I sorta disregarded it and went straight to my tunes. I noticed off the bat the quality was different. I wouldn't say it's bad or it 'worsened' but it just sounded different than what I've been used to. I tried getting used to it but I can't get into the music as much as I used to - hit's aren't as heavy and climaxes seem dulled down or washed out.

Anyways - I tried uninstalling IDT audio only to find out that it was an actual device and that I had no sound by uninstalling it. Installing it again resulted in the same quality difference.

Is there anything I can do to get the default sound back? Would a system restore do the trick? I really don't care if I have SP1 or SP2, I just want the same sound I had before. Any tips?

The facts are that SP2 has changed something that affects the quality of your music.
If you use system restore, all will be back to the way it was prior to the install of SP2. Initially, I would not go that route. I would go to search and type device manager, in device manager, uninstall the audio driver, then boot. You will have a new driver. If the quality is not imporoved, uninstall and then go to the website of the sound card and update driver from there. Its my guess that all will be good, again. Before doing anything make a system restore point, so that you can go back in case of problems.

Hello, for starters, you need to keep SP2, that made Vista much better , If you are just now getting your SP2, you may very well need to check your drivers for your audio . Go to the manufacture of your computer and get latest drivers, download them , then install them, make a restore pt before doing this. Also, after ensuring your drivers are up to date, in your Audio Manager, you will find when you open it up, there are sound settings that you can customize, for example, i have mine set for how i like mine to sound, you have room correction, equalizer, bunch of customized settings. But, to reiterate, keep your SP2 installed as well as any other MS updates that are needed. Post back how this works out .

Alright well I created a restore point, uninstalled both the "High Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC", then restarted. Unfortunately this did not change the quality back to what it used to be. I'm fairly certain it's the IDT audio doing it's own thing by tinkering with the sound attempting to "enhance" it.

Both drivers are up to date as far as using windows "Update Driver Software" function - should I still go onto the manufacturer's site? Also, where can I find the Audio Manager? I've been looking for such a thing on the system to see if I can fix it myself.

If your Icon for your Audio Manager is not showing on your taskbar next to the time, then you could go to your start button and in the search bar type Audio Manager and you should see it in results. Tell ya what, i have terrific sound from my speakers, course , i have SP2 and latest drivers for my audio installed.

Huh, two things I noticed.

The icon for the IDT audio thing is gone - not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Also, my computer seems to lack an audio manager. Is it something that comes with the system as a default or is it supposed to be installed through something?

Use that restore point that you just made and lets see if you get the Audio Manager back, i think you misunderstood something, and have uninstalled wrong item. Post back please .

Actually before that restore point I also had no Audio Manager. When you mentioned it in your first post I did a search on my system to see if I had such a thing to fix the audio myself. Had nothing, I figured it was a 3rd party program or it was linked to your particular sound card. I may have, perhaps, had an audio manager before installing SP2. I vaguely recall such a thing a while ago, but I'm not certain.

I think everyone has that sidebar error, last i checked on that , Microsoft has not fixed it yet. You may have no other option except to go back to a point where your sound was working, then install updates one by one to see which one has caused this issue. See how that works for you.

Just as pointer here: -

I would not install any Windows recommended sound drivers for your system, they are not fully compatable with the hardware. I know from experience.

If this is your problem & you can get it back working, without a full recovery to day one, you have done well. I did not manage to do it!

Alright thanks for the help guys! I'll look into a system recovery back to before the SP2 update.

I find it strange though that my windows updater never mentioned SP2 - I was kinda surprised I didn't have it. What are the best advantages to SP2 over SP1?

Also, any idea how I can get audio manager back? I'm not even sure if I had it BEFORE installing SP2. If I can tweak my audio settings then I won't needa resort to a recovery. Maybe there's a 3rd party program that I could try?

SP2 compiled bug fixes and when installed , saved alot of space as quite a few of the SP1 were removed , i had a friend that wound up with almost 2 gigs of space after installing the SP2, he also mentioned that his Vista performed much better, also, it should be noted that a person really should always use latest applicable updates that are available for ones computer to provide security patches and enhance the performance of the System files.
You might want to use Speccy , a free program , gives you your hardware specs plus software driver info. Speccy - System Information - Free Download
Also, to keep yourself updated , once you have time , use this , also free : Free Computer Security - Personal Software Inspector (PSI) - Secunia

Hi,

As I said earlier, if a Windows update driver for the sound system has been installed, like I did, then I could not get tit back to fully functional & had to restore. The sound device manager is part of the drivers.

Only update via the HP update facility for the Sound system. OK?

Before I do a system restore, my last chance to gain my sound back is to be able to get a 3rd party program similar to Audio Manager. Does anyone know of such a program that I could use to possibly tweak my sound back?

I would suggest that the Windows Seven drivers could be correct for your Vista system? As this is the only version I can find for downloading. Please check them out & report back, OK?

Good news!

I was looking through the drivers and wasn't finding much toward an audio manager. I googled "HP audio manager" and noticed a lot of people have a Realtek HD Audio manager. I decided to take a look on a thread on it and found out it can be accessed through control panel > sound and hardware. I went there an noticed that same IDT Audio icon that I originally mentioned in my first post. This time I decided upon actually checking it out (d'oh) instead of ignoring it and blaming it responsible for my poor audio. I realized this was my audio manager (although it was called audio panel for me), and it had some crappy preset that it had in effect constantly. A few minutes of fumbling with the settings and I have much sexier sound quality now.

So it seems that SP2 installed this audio panel that immediately put its garbage mono 8kbps 2khz preset that haunted me for days. Thanks to you guys, I managed to remedy that.

Thanks again! Audio sounds beautiful once more. I'll definitely be hanging around this forum more.
