Helping my friend create a small workgroup network in her Chiropractic office. 1 XP 'server' with office record database and 2 XP client's.

All worked well - print and file sharing. But replace one of the clients XP PC with new Vista PC.

:sleepy:

PC set up okay, surfs and 'sees' other resources on the network - but when attempting to open icon's to get into other 2 PC resource details, given error message saying no can do! Vista diagnosis say nothing wrong; all firewalls off etc - but no connection.

New to Vista and this info source - so all help/advice is appreciated.

If the Vista machine can see the others OK but you have problems browsing first thing I'd try is to find out how to check if Vista is set up as the Master Browser. Some stuff has changed between XP and Vista networking. Maybe somebody else can clarify but afaik you can only have one machine be the Master Browser on a Workgroup or you get conflicts.

Hi Domappleton,

You need to set the following two Local Security Policy settings on your XP (and only XP) machines before they can communicate with Vista...

I used my Vista machine to show the settings, you must change these setting on your XP machine, not the Vista Machine and they must have identical configuration.

You also need to disable"Simple File Sharing" on the XP machines under "ControlPanel\Folder Options\Simple File Sharing" before Vista can Authenticate properly...

Once you set these three settings on the XP machines, you will be able to use networking ;)

If you have problems you know where to ask ;)

Thanks for your answer. I am sure you have the solution however, where and how will I find and change the local security settings in XP? I also do not see this option:
"You also need to disable"Simple File Sharing" on the XP machines under "ControlPanel\Folder Options\Simple File Sharing" before Vista can Authenticate properly..." in the location you have identified?

Cheers
