Vista Search Issue

Hi guys. I'm new here, I hope to stay around, but ultimately I joined because I have a problem.

I'm running Vista x64 Ultimate here, and the problem is the search is only returning results from the indexed locations that Windows picks. When I add a location, it will index them (they will appear in the list of indexed locations, they will appear in the "indexed locations" folder & the "indexed files" will increase; however it won't show in the search results.

However, if I "Search Everywhere" then it will find the files in the "indexed locations" folder that it searches first, but they won't appear in the start menu.

Here are some steps I have already taken.

1) Rebuilt the index, twice.

2) Indexed everything on my hard drives (this took ages, but although I did have something like 300'000 'indexed files' only the files from the Start menu & User folders appeared in the results)

3) Changed what folders to index.

4) Reset default settings

5) Moved my index location to a new location & rebuilt

For example, one of my indexed folders is my music folder. Now, that has about 1500 or so MP3's in it; it added it to the index, the number of files increased; however if I search for " *.mp3 " it finds... nothing :(

So, I'm stuck.

Any ideas in what is causing this?

Thanks for your help :)

Hello TCGS, and welcome to Vista Forums.

In your case, I would recommend to just disable the index and let Vista default to using a non-indexed search. Afterwards, you should also adjust your search options for more thorough search results.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

But the search feature is one of the biggest things that Microsoft boasted about (although it was not exactly original...) it was, however, one of the things that pulled me away from XP, and now its not working? There must be some way to fix it :(
