I recently installed 64bit premium on my XPS 420. I am having tons of problems and cannot find solutions.

If I leave my computer on and idle for about 4 hours (or any length of time)it goes to a standby..normal. but when get back on it, everything is screwy. If I plug in a flash drive it won't read it. If i try to turn off the computer or restart it, it dosnt shut down, it just goes to the screen where it says its shutting down but never shuts down. Programs act funny and freeze up a lot.

Hi,

Does everything work ok, if you just boot in normally - do the problems only occur after resume from hibernate/sleep?

Yea pretty much. I turn my computer on in the mornings. I leave it on and go to work. When I come home and wake the computer up is when the problems start occurring. I have to do a hard shut down to restart it. when I do that everything starts working ok.

Common symptom of not having latest updates/latest drivers. Update your Vista to the latest service pack and install the latest updates then check on your manufacturer site for latest drivers for display, chipset and if any power utilities are available for your model install them too.

Sorry this isn't a direct answer, but it is a work around. I've had the same problem as you for a year and I've kept completely up to date on my drivers -- don't get me wrong, update them as the previous poster suggested but don't hold your breath.

If the driver solution doesn't work you can always go with a work around. Go to control panel, power management, and select the high performance option. You'll burn more electricity but your gonk will never go to sleep. Costs a little more money in electricity (try to shutdown manually when you know you'll be gone) but probably saved me 5 years at the end of my life from the inevitable anger of dealing with a computer that was slower than a Vic 20...

Last night my computer told me to update my chipset using Microsoft's problem and solutions center. I did that so we'll see how it does today.

Yea same problem today. I guess i am just going to have to make it stay on all day. the reason i leave it on is because i remote in and work on stuff when I am at work. When I come home I just want it to work without having to restart. thanks for the help.

Hi

There have been reports of certain hardware/drivers that cause problems when resuming from hibernation/sleep modes, so try Googling your major component model names & #'s to see what info you can find on this.
Like if you had an Nvidia 8800 GTS for instance, try searching "nvidia 8800 GTS problem on resume.." or whatever terms you might want to try.
I know I saw allot of issues on resuming from sleep mode awhile back, but I can't remember exactly what component was causing it.
