Vista PC Freezes on startup

Hi,

Recently i have been getting BSOD randomly on my PC and it reboots, i did write the error code down to look into but unfortunately have lost it.

Anyway, now the problem has got worse when i go to log into the machine it just freezes, sometimes i'm lucky enough to see the desktop but as soon as i click something it freezes. If i boot up in safe mode then it logs in fine.

When i originally kept getting the reboots i did a memory test which came back fine and also a quick test on the Hard drive which came back fine. I have also took out the sticks of memory and tried them one at a time and still suffer the same problem, so i'm starting to move away from the issue being memory. When i logged in, in safe mode i turned off most of the 'start up' programs incase it was an issue with too many programs trying to start but the problem still exists.

Has anyone got any advice to try? The machine is running Vista Home Premium with 4Gb Ram. I have never had any trouble with the machine up until now, it is a few years old though, so could be a hardware component starting to fail but i dont want to go spending money changing bits only for it to not rectify the issue.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

A further update on this;

The PC boots up and shows the login screen, but when you then click the icon for your user it hangs for about 5 minutes and then goes to the screen where you type your password. Once i have typed my password in and hit enter it stays on the welcome page for 10 minutes before then logging in and loading the desktop. Once logged in it appears to be working fine but like i said, the BSOD i have suffered have been random.

maybe if you can go into your msconfic and uncheck the non microsoft items on the startup... That should at least heko with the freezing... and then make sure you dont have Windows/Microsoft Defender scanning in the background..If that is marked on startup, then uncheck it. This program eats the cpu usage like crazy...
