I think there is really no definitive answer on this. Since you are "quite new to computers" all you should care about is stability. I use Vista Ultimate and XP Pro. I like both. XP is more responsive while Vista is more secure. However, if I was forced to choose I would choose Vista.

If you'd like to use your computer for audio recording, mixing, synthesis, etc., use XP. There are still a lot of compatibility and speed issues with Vista.

i have xp pro and vista x64 dual booting

in my case my music apps for my midi keyboard an vst programs all have problems
with vista x64

on x64 my apps suffer from bad latency problems where on xp pro there isnt a problem at all

bubba nope there isnt any writen law saying you need to use a overpriced apple
system to use music apps

almost all music apps come with a windows installer aswell as a apple so they SHOULD work with both

Well I just changed from XP32bit pro to Vista Home Premium 64 and so far I am impressed, it found everything I had installed with only my sound and video needing newer drivers. It did kinda freak me out on the initial install as it sat at a blueish green screen for 10mins before finally giving me the install screen, I am assuming it was inspecting hardware during that time, because the install went very very smooth after that.

If you have the hardware to support vista I would say give it a shot its so far after much skepticism by me its proving to be a good step to a new OS.

I have used both. I am using Vista now on a custom rig that I built for it. Most of my software works, the software that didn`t got patched or replaced by something else. Vista is the way ahead with hardware getting smaller and cheaper.

I have just replaced (actually accidentally deleted) XP pro with Vista Ultimate. I will say I am lucky that I got all the required drivers for my notebook, display is amazing, so far everything is working fine. I need to check for a while to make any definite comment, but my recommendation would be before installing vista just make sure you have the required driver support.
