Vista not starting

I have an everex laptop I bought in march of 07, had been working fine until it loaded what I thought to automatic updates but windows will not start up because it says there is a problem. I loaded the recovery disk and went through the steps but it still says there is an error, will not start in safe mode either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
