Howdy!
I just installed a new hd WD500g sata to my box. Vista "sees" the new hd in device manager, but doesnt see it in "my computer. It is freshly installed and straight out of the bubble wrap,I was thinking gee, maybe it needs formatted...but i dont see that option anywhere...maybe im missing something.... i donno...first time i've run into this....usually the drives are "seen" right away.....

you will need to go into the computer management console.
Go to your control panel. Select classic view (cos that's the only way I know how to guide you there....I have the dutch version, so I am translating on the fly here).
Look for the system management icon (the little cog with the little list over it with three tick marks on it). In there you see ten shortcuts. You need to double click the shortcut for computer management. This will bring up a new window.
In there, in the left pane, go to the second subsection (storage) and click on diskmanagement (again, this is translated on the fly) (a single click will do)
This should bring you to the view you need. It brings up a view with all your disks, including partitioned and non partitioned space.

Your new disk is still unpartitioned. Find the unpartitioned disk, and partition it (I think you right click on it)
then once you've done that, I think you right click again, and select format.
that should do it.
