Vista keeps starting the installer when Visio is loaded

I have a little problem which just started yesterday. After over 12 hrs of reading forums, googling, running the cd on repair (for office 2007 & Visio 2007) and finally uninstalling and reinstalling visio it continues to happen (windows installer starts up). No issue with all other software (excel/word/access/picture publisher/powerpoint/outlook...etc).


What happened yesterday? reloaded the addins for adobe acrobat into excel only - this addin dropped out when excel crashed during an operation with acrobat. But I haven't used visios for some months prior so it may be a coincidence. Also the only addin i have for visio is Acrobat PDFMAKER. Most of the forums speak of a fix associated with bluetooth send function addins this doe not appear anywhere in my OS??


So to date:
It appears that every time the installer starts up (unless I cancel early) the programm settings (hot key data is changed to some "...visio.viewer..." data setting??). I go back in and reset them manually and then it works fine (visio that is). I run the same software on a laptop (except my OS there is XP pro - much more stable i can confirm that for sure!!!) so i reset the settings as per my laptop and it seems to work without crashing. One complication however is that there is an extra folder in the vista registry for visio called "shellex" and I'm not sure if the data is correct as I cannot cross check with XP??

Also after i correct the the registry the file icon looks more like a PDF icon where you see a miniature of the file page rather than the the typical office icon after the installer (if left to complete the process) has done its thing and as has always been typically associated with a visio files (at least in my over 10 years of using visio programs - 2000 / 2003 and now 2007 version) and continues to be displayed on my laptop - how bizarre??

From my humble perspective it certainly appears to be an issue with vista and why it effects only visio and not the other office 2007 programs who knows??

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!
(PS I have to say solving the continual crash was a significant relief as I am trying to complete a project at the moment)

I would look here first and see if you are setting Viso things up as they should be.
I thought it was only flow chart software
I would remove any plugins or extra drivers and see if the problem goes away
If so update plugins
If your plugins are up to date try roll back to an earlier version

My original post had an error? After functioning for some time the program crashed again!!!

The tutorials are only for operating the software - nothing to do with bugs and problems. I use visio in lieu of Auto CAD much quicker to use for engineering drawings and layouts (I have heard it was originally a type of autoCad program).

I had only one COM add-in (plug-in if you like) that is different from the program i am running on my laptop and that is acrobat (adobe pro) in the command bar which has now been removed which seems more stable now but it is early days.

The main issue is that vista installer is still starting up every time I go to load the program (VISIO) regardless of the registry settings used (i.e. either after installer has finished its work at application start up or after reloading the software or after manually configuring the values to match my other machines values for the program). Also if I allow the windows installer to run its course the "hkey_classes_root" registry values are revised and then it crashes like crazy (this is really bizarre as I have been using this version of visio on this machine for about 4 years with no issues, in fact i have had no issues with any of the office programs and i attribute this to never accepting any microsoft updates except for window defender). Subsequently when I manually modify the values back to what I believe them to be It is much more stable??

The only other posts I have seen for the crashing of office programs and for the windows installer that continues to attempt to load the program is the "send file via bluetooth" addin (no such addins in my office programs)??

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated

Do you think maybe the installer thinks it hasn't finished the install?

Several things come to mind:
1) If you have Visio and Visio viewer installed remove V.V.
2) Perform a restore point to before the start of your issue.
3) Remove and reinstall Visio.
4) Completely remove all of office, clean up with perfect uninstaller or revo uninstaller, and then reinstall. Back up your registry first.

Please do not edit the registry uniless you know what you are doing because it is very sensitive. Doing so can mess up your programs or even Windows.
