Vista Keeps Freezing

My laptop was working like normal, when I left it on and went to do something else. When I came back the display was off as usual. I tried to "wake" it up by wiggling the mouse and hitting the power button, but neither worked.

I had to force it to shut down and then reboot. When I rebooted, it said a disk needed to be checked. Unfortunately I didn't get the specifics of that step.

Now it has been freezing at other times too. The cursor won't move, no programs work, nothing. Hitting ctrl + alt + delete also does nothing. The only way to fix it that I have found is to force it to shut down.

I did drop my laptop last week. I'm trying to figure out if that's the cause or if this is a software issue.

I have backed everything up so I can just reinstall the operating system if necessary.

My antivirus software expired the same day this started happening, if that's relevant. Thanks!

Here are my solutions to freezing, and an excellent article, which I hope is of some help
Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Download and run malwarebytes, a full scan after you update
Run antivirus scan
Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.
Test in safe mode, does it still happen?
Try with clean boot..

Test Hard Drive www.carrona.org/hddiag.html or this test http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If these ideas do not work, post and we can look further into the problem

>>> it said a disk needed to be checked......

Without the actual message, I am no better than making a logical " educated " guess........ you were asked to do a disk check, chkdsk.
Disk check function is to find and repair " bad sectors " etc in your hard disk.

How to do disk check :

Start button > in the search box, type cmd > look up at the top left, there should be a cmd > right click at cmd > click Run As Administrator > in the black and white cmd window, at the flashing prompt, type this command line .... chkdsk /f/r > press Enter key.
Note : there is a space between " chkdsk " and " / "
The screen will tell you something like this.....
it cannot do that now, but do you want to do that when you restart the machine ?
type Y as in " yes " > press Enter key > exit cmd window > reboot ( shut down and restart the computer ) > disk check will commence.
It will take quite a while. Be patient and DO NOT TURN OFF the computer.
The machine will restart when disk check is completed.

See if that fixes your issue. No guarantees.
