Vista Gmail Issue

Hi Guys,

This is my first post and I hope its in the right place.

I got my new Dell XPS M1530 yesterday which came with Vista and was really excited to use it untill I was forced to switch my mail from Gmail to Yahoo by Vista, indirectly ofcourse.

The problem is that 98% of the times when I try to send mails from my Gmail account (I use it from the browser itself and not windows mail), it gives me a #008 error. Vista is also not letting me open a few other webpages that I am able to in XP. Mostly the pages are the secure ones.

It came with McAfee, so being a non techie guy I thought that it must be the one to blame so I uninstalled it and installed my loved AVG. But the error persists.

The thing to be noted is that I am able to login, receive, read and do everything else with Gmail except sending mails.

The remedies I have tried so far:

1. Use another browser (FF and Chrome)
2. Remove/ deactivate firewalls, email scanners.
3. Use Gmails Secure mode (https://mail.google.com)
4. Putting all security settings in IE7 to "Low" allowing everything.

I apologize for such a long post but this appears to be a common problem with Gmail in Vista or you can say Vista with Gmail  and there is no proper solution availabe for it in the net or with the two giants themselves as far as I know.

I would really appreciate if you guys could throttle your genuises a bit to see if you could help.:)

Cheers,
Vipul

Sorry I can't help really but just wanted to say that I didn't seem to have any problems with Gmail in Vista, I have it set up in Windows Live Mail along with Mailwasher Pro but I know when I was first setting it up I emailed via the browser just to check if it would work, and it did. ;)

Hi Joan,

Thanks for the post.

I am feeling so disgusted of Vista right now

Everything works fine except SENDING mails in Gmail and opening a few sites. There must be something that is blocking these things but I am unable to find out where.

Hi Guys,

I have had a breakthrough.

I was earlier using my wireless router to connect my laptop to the internet. Its a ADSL connection.

Now I tried to connect the modem directly to my laptop through the lan cable and Gmail and the other sites started to function!

So, it might be some setting in my router that is causing all the havoc.

Now the question is that I am using the same router with the same configuration and settings on my XP laptop and it works fine.

So, why and what is conflicting with Vista?

HI vipulkrgupta

Vista uses some new technologies for communicating with wireless routers - unfortunately not all routers are capable of understanding these new commands.

You may want to check out your router manufactures website to see if there is a firmware update available for your model to give full Vista compatibility.

If not the are ways of disabling these new features to work around these annoying problems

any new OS will have some differences but give vista a little time while you get used to it and I'm sure it will grow on you :D

Hey,

Thanks a lot for the reply. I am using Linksys WRT54GC. I upgraded the firmware yesterday itself, but I am not sure if its compatible with Vista.

Does anyone knows about it compatibility issues with Vista?

Hi Vipul

Not sure if this will help but make sure your router and any local firewall has the ports 25,465, and 587 open as these are the ports google uses for smtp.

may not make a difference but it may, this problem does seem to be router based as have read various posts from lynksys users having problems and the WRT54G is mentioned not sure what the C in your pt. no. is

another thing that has worked is the use of another browser such as Firefox or chrome it may be worthwhile try on of thos just to see if the problem is in IE you could also try "Safe" mode IE (should be an icon available in start menu)

Its not just Gmail that is having issues. There a plenty of sites that won't open through the router's connection and would open when I connect directly.

I have the ports added before and have tried using FF and Chrome :(

Ok will do a little digging to see if I can find a definitive answer.

do you get any message when not accessing a site or does it just hang?

Thanks a lot.

Well when Gmail fails, it gives the message "Oops... a server error occurred and your email was not sent. (#008)"

For all other sites there is no error message as such. The page just takes forever but never opens.

Hi

Two things to try

First if you have not already done this - switch off vista's IPv6 support in the Network properties for the wireless adaptor.

another thing to try is a manual DNS server address in either windows TCP/IP settings for the wireless adaptor or directly in the router if you prefer. Two reliable free servers are at
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

so could be used for primary and secondary DNS addresses

I see Nigel is helping but just wanted to add that when I was setting up my Gmail I was connected to the router via Ethernet cable so have never used Vista wirelessly.

I've had my router 4 years now and even though I was worried about it working with Vista I had no problems, just used the cable that used to be in my XP machine and put it into the Vista and connected, made the XP wireless :D

I know it's a little more involved going wireless with Vista so maybe that's why you are having problems that I didn't.

Hi Vipul

Okay. Tried. Still won't work.

The problem is definitely with WRT54GC

yes it definitely looks that way, the only way to be sure would be to try a different router (another manufacturer) If you can borrow another router from a friend or colleague, that would be a useful test.

You could always try an email to Linksys, my router manufacturer offers an lifetime warranty and have found them very helpful, Linksys may well be the same

Hi,

Well yes, the problem is definitely Vista and Linksys WRT54GC compatibility. I tried to chat live with their suppport earlier this morning and they said its Vista's problem not there's!

They anyways did tried to help me by making me change a few settings like Beacon etc. but it didn't work.

The problem is that on Linsys's site, it clearly says that Linksys WRT54GC is compatible with Vista which is clearly not happening here ;)

I think I will have to get a router from someone to see if it would work.
