Explorer tells me it has "no respond" when reading my D driver, it will look at for an hour to tell it cannot respond. A report will be generated so Microsoft can tell me they will "research my problem" So every day for two weeks I have sent Microsoft a note telling them my problem should be their problem. I installed a new dvd reader and get the same respond which is "not responding" I update all my drivers and again try to read my game only to have Vista explorer tell me to reload explorer and we will generate a report Has this happen to you? Is it a Gateway 5426e 32bit problem or just Microsoft having some fun best to all and to all a microsoft christmas

Hello Vance,

Welcome to the forums.

Is this a new computer or a new problem? Have you had a look in 'Device Manager' to see if the device is working and that the driver is installed.

This is a Gateway GT5426e (from tiger) so new to me, Device Manager state device is work have update drivers Will read the disk after about 20 min but attempts to load so after about two hours and generates a NO respond or restart explorer options

sorry for the grammar errors will attempt to improve Thanks Gary Could it be the wire connecting the driver to motherboard or a software issue? Computer could not load Mass Effect except for reading the file in disk? Allowed the computer 24 hours to read the disk without success. The same results for other games. It did load Gothic 3 after 4 hours vance

Hi Vance,

Is the optical drive recognised by your BIOS? Check the POST screen when you boot up. Does this display the drive and detect the manufacturer/model number? Enter your BIOS and check that the transfer rate of your drive is set to DMA or Auto and not PIO mode. Don't forget to exit saving changes if any alterations are made. If all this checks out, go into Device Manager and check the transfer rates there. You will probably need to restart for changes to take effect. Another thing to check is the security of the cables - make sure that they are inserted firmly and correctly orientated. Another possibility could be your PSU. To quickly check this, enter your BIOS and go to the System Health page. Watch the voltages as you operate the optical drive (insert a disc). It is normal for the voltages to fluctuate slightly, but any excess drop in voltage, particularly on the 12V line, could indicate possible problems either with your PSU and/or your drive, in which case I would agree with John that it is a hardware issue.

Bios detects the original dvd(set to master other to slave) and the newly installed dvd(HP DVD CD/DVDDW TS - H652D ATA Device). Physically checked cables and utilized the BIOS on System Health had no change in voltage. Both DVD behave same way reads the disk but can not load the game. Today, the computer required several minutes to load FireFox. So this may be something else. Ran sysbot, avg and ad-ware to check system. A few cookies but no viruses. Did download ATI manager for the graphic card Radeon 1600x Pro. Also the system required a long time to boot 8 minutes. any ideas this is like a puzzle with no pattern best regards vance

This just keeps getting better. Download nero cd/dvd speed test program. The test demonstrated an excellent download speed,8x. However, the Vista performance screen illustrated a download speed of 1kb/min(about 1%) when download the game. So do you still thing it is a hardware problem? Looks like a vista issue, google info state that with this chipset and vista problems have occurred. some of you smart guys give me an idea please v

More information if your interested.... replaced cable between mother board and disk drivers no change in operation
changes disk drivers to cs setting instead of M/s no change in operation
utilized device manager and uninstalled drivers then shutdown and reboot let vista find new hardware and install no change in operation
Utilizing the task manager can view the behavior of the disk drivers both behave the same loading rate vary from nothing to 1kb/sec so it cannot be the drivers or cable Would this not eliminate the hardware issue and put it back on the software. Vista is not a good system xp was much better These various games could load on the traded xp system (emachine).
