Vista Crashes At Startup

Wow, I'm so glad I found this forum Looks like there are a lot of helpful people here. I appreciate any help that I can get.

I'm running Vista Home Premium x64. I can not boot in safe mode, and I've tried making a recovery disk and running a boot up recovery, but it said that it was not able to solve the problem.

Things I have found:
I ran a virus check and it found 1 virus which I then deleted.
I also have found that I have two drivers that were bad.

The last thing I want to do is to do a clean install. I wanted to include my minidump folder, but I'm not sure how to go about getting it, since I can't boot up. I might be able to use the Knopix method to browse the hard drive, but I don't know if that's the best way to go...

Any help would be appreciated, I don't mind repeating some of the steps I've already taken if need be.

Hello I am Josh and I will give you some tips too see if it fixes your Problem

Ok First Boot into the recovery Disk and open up Command Prompt

and enter the Following:

bootrec.exe /fixboot

then Enter

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Then press enter

Hopefully it would have fixed the Master Boot Record (MBR) For Vista

Thanks for the quick reply Josh. I ran both commands and it said it completed successfully. I then restarted with quiet anticipation...but I was heart broken when it didn't work

I've figured out a few more things. Using f8 I noticed an option to turn off auto reboot. This allowed me to write down my bsod error 0x0000007B. I did a little digging and found this article Unfortunately changing my drive configuration didn't help. I've burned a version of Knopix onto a dvd and checked for my dump files, but there was nothing in the folder. I can access everything on my hard drive. Is there a way to replace my driver or change the registry so it will load ACHI? I also saw somewhere that upgrading your OS will reinstall the boot sequence for you without having to reload all your programs. The article is pretty old and refers to sp1, I think I have sp2, and I don't believe that I would be able to uninstall the service pack because my system just wont start. I was wondering if it would work if I upgraded to Windows 7? Thanks in advance, Paul

Ok I think you are going to need to reinstall your OS Do you have an Installation Disk?

I have an HP with no Vista instalation disk. I created a recovery disk from the factory defult, but my computer now says that it is not allowed on this system?? When I use the recovery disk it does give me the option to restore to factory defalt.

I was wondering if I could buy a second drive and clone the bad one, restore that one to factory defalt, install programs, and copy folders over to the new disk? Then I could set them up in raid 1 keeping it unplugged and plugging it in every once in a while so I always have a full copy available. I've been meaining to set up a raid 1 anyway...good intentions, slow reaction.

Yeah that should be Possible But your Mother Board may Reject it depending on which way you do it but I think it will work and be carefull that you don't Corrupt the MBR doing the Process this will render the OS Unbootable
