VISTA and XP

Please help me before I do something drastic....

I have a loptop running XP and just build a home machine with VISTA Home Premium. I've tried and tried but I am missing something. Both computers will eventually "find" each other over my Linksys Router but neither can access the other. I get "the network path was not found" on my VISTA machine and "access denied..." on my XP. I've tried everything except ramming the two machines together to make one monster mess of machinery.

Please help.

There is a hotfix to resolve the problem of XP and Vista on a network..I use it and no longer have a problem...of course.I am assuming you've enabled all that you should in Network and Sharing.

I'm a novice that just got his XP and Vista network working. After making sure at least one folder on each PC was set to shared, this finally got my PCs talking to each other:

XP PC:
1. Control Panel > Network Connections > right click Local Area Connection > Properties.
2. Verify that Client for MS Networks and File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks are both checked.

Vista PC:
1. Start > Network > Networking and Sharing Center > Manage network connections > right click Local Area Connection > Properties
2. Same as step-2 above.

After doing the above, everything magically started to work. Hope this helps you out,

I went to this website. I have already done what is written there, several times. Where is the "hotfix" you said is there? There is just a bunch of advertising and instructions....

---(my laptop also uses VISTA - and the main pc uses XP)---when I could not get connection after trying a million times, I finally phoned the 1-800-number for the 'router' maker---(we set up the main pc + my l/t over the phone!)--- it WORKS now---yeay for manufacturer's help lines!---

Hey Don,

Still having problems? I changed some settings in my router and got the dreaded "Access Denied" popup. Since that was the only thing I did, I knew it had to be related to that.

I changed the router settings to the way they were originally but still got the "Access Denied". I reset the router using the "reset" function in the router's setup page and still got the error. I powered down both PCs and powered back up and still got the error.

Then I powered down both PCs, powered the router off for about 5 seconds and powered the router back up. Then powered both PCs back up. Guess what, the "Access Denied" popup did not happen and I can access either PC from the other as it was before.

Try powering everything down and powering back up. Even if you did this before, things you changed after that can apparently affect stuff.

Long shot but maybe worth a try,

One other thing Don,

In another thread, the OP changed encryption type from WEP to WPA2 and everything started to work. If you're using WEP but have WPA or WPA2 encryption capability, it might be worth a try.

The same encryption key has to be setup in both the router and the networked wireless computers.

The router I have is not wireless...

And, the router passed the VISTA compatibility test...

Still no luck making them communicate.
