Hi everybody. I'm new to this forum. And I'd greatly appreciate if you guys can help me solve my problem.
I have a laptop running on Vista home basic 32bit and 4 other desktops with XP Pro. The laptop is connected to a DSL Modem through the wireless adapter and to the other computers via D-Link 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch.The other computers are connected via the Ethernet Switch. The local LAN works absolutely great, I can share and access the other computers from any one of them but the internet connection works only with the Vista laptop. I want share my internet connection with all the computers and I've lost a great deal of hair in this process!!
The basic layout is as follows:
DSL modem--> laptop with Vista (connected wirelessly)-->D-Link 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch-->Desktop A, B, C and D(all on XP pro).
The problem is none of the desktops have wireless capability! What I've done now is connected the internet connection to one of the desktop with two network adapters. And the other to the Ethernet switch where all the other computers are connected via an Ethernet cable.
Now the problem is, the internet can be accessed from any desktop(on XP) but not on the laptop (on vista home basic).
The basic layout now is:
Broadband modem-->Host Computer (XP)--->D-link 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch--->PC A(XP)----(from the switch)-->PC B(XP)----(from the switch)-->Laptop(Vista)
The host computer is configured with the IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0 and Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
The other computers(XP) has IP addresses as 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 (Subnet and Default gateway being the same as the host Computer)
The laptop(vista) has IP address: 192.168.0.4(Subnet and default gateway remaining the same)
please help me to configure the Internet on my laptop.
Doh! Why not just connect the laptop *also* to the modem, using wireless, and leave the other computer (desktop) connected to it wired? That should solve all your problems....
Unless your ISP is a beast and will not allow 2 computers to connect to the modem simultaneously....in which case I ***highly*** recommend a broadband router with wireless and wired connections - they have the added benefit of having very decent hardware-based firewalls built into them as well...
