I am being prompted for administrator yet I do not have an administrator profile. I have default, mine, public. How do I set up an administrator account or make mine administrator. I thought I had done this upon installation.

There is a built in administrator who is not visible unless you log on in safe mode with networking.

You are being asked for administrator code because your UAC is on and your account is standard (or public). If you disable UAC (which you can't unless you do it in safe mode using the built in administrator account), you won't see the prompt for administrator.

But while you are there (safe mode) I must tell you it is advisable to surf with standard account and use the administrator account for major system modifications (tweakings). Thus, you can create another account and name it Administrator and
give it administrator privileges and then rename the public account your desired
name and give it a standard (NOT administrator) account...this way you do not need to go to safe mode to use administrator account when you want to do major tweakings.

And then there is a default Guest account that you can turn on and off for a guest.

thanks coolNY,
I had taken the uac off in the control panel and at least it got rid of the annoying "did you want to run this program" messages.
I'll try your advice tomorrow... tired of working on all of this for the last several hours.
My main problem is that I just bought Norton Ghost 14 and that is the software that won't run. I've not heard back from them yet. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome Ched.

Tomorrow, boot in safe mode, log in with built in Administrator's account and activate UAC. Then create one account with administrator privileges and name it temporarily any name and secure with password(no more than four digits.). Then rename your public account your favorite name and secure with another password (or not) and stay with standard privileges(NOT administrator's). Then reboot. Log in as the administrator and do your final user name/accounts tweakings. When ready to surf, Log off and switch user to your standard account username.

The reason it is recommendable to surf internet with non-administrator account is in case of hi-jacking and encounter with nasty intrusive malwares, you would not be giving away administrator's privileges...which on hi-jacker's hand can be disastrous.
You can limit use of administrator account to major tweakings (installations, deletions, restorations, recoveries, health checks, HDD and memory tests... etc).

UAC can be such a nag...but after a while, you get used to it...(that's why your administrator's password should be no more than 4 digits).

Well CoolNY. the last thing I did last night was re-configure my external drive that I was ghosting to from FAT32 to NTFS. I ran the backup today and it is working. All that security stuff was after the fact that Norton Ghost 14 could not write to the configuration even though it could with Ghost 10 under XP.

Thanks for all your help. I will most probably be back with some other issue haha. Happy New Year to you.
