Vista 64 Problems

Hi,

I finally decided to upgrade to Vista, and since I have 4GB ram I thought I'd give 64bit a shot.

Every game I play crashes, or fails to load at all, or gets into the game and crashes during map load.

Specs:
Q9550
4GB DDR2
P35-DS4
8800GT 512

I have Vista Ultimate 64 installed. I have installed and re-installed the OS multiple times to no effect. I've downloaded all of the windows updates.

During one of my first installs of vista, I was able to get in to games of codwaw, but then it would crash after about 5 secs.

Games tried: CoD4, CodWaW, Crysis Warhead, TF2. They all crash or fail to load even the menu.

I also installed the Texas Hold-Em poke game with Ultimate extras. I noticed that the felt was artifacting strangely.

I have reinstalled the 181 x64 nvidia drivers a few times thinking this was the issue. It didnt fix it. I tried the beta 185 drivers and older 178 drivers. All end up with my games crashing, including the hold-em artifacting.

So i have been reading forums such as this and googling and the Realtek audio drivers get a huge mention for causing game crashes. I ahve updated the driver to the latest from the realtek site. Still no good. Re-installed them a few times.

Curiously, when I disabled the audio device in device manager, cod4 failes to even get to the main menu. As soon as I re-enable the audio device, cod4 boot to the menu but crashed on the map load.

I've done a check disk on both c:\ and D:\ (apps and games installed on D:). Both show no bad sektors. I've defragged as well. Page file is on c: but i tried it on both and on just D: still same.

I also came accross a few program chrashes. one stated that files on D: was corrupt which is why i ran chkdsk on my HDDs. Also had a few files on D:\ become corrupt.

Short of going out and buying a PCI or PCI-E sound card, i dknot know what else to try. I suspect its the audio drivers but I really cant be sure.

This PC I had running XP32 without a hitch for a year. Soon as I upgrade to V64, boom not a single game works. So I doubt its hardware. i suspect its a driver/vista issue.

Any advice? What else can I try? I'm going nuts here. I'm close to packing it in and going back to XP :(

P.S. UGH Just as I type this, Windows Defender just crashed :/

My Computer

Another few points I forgot, Office 2007 keeps telling me the data file was not closed properly and has to be checked for errors. It currently sits on my D:\

Is this normal? I'm not killing outlook. Even when I file -> exit and then reopen it it tells me it wasnt closed properly.

Also a couple of programs i downloaded seemed to be corrupt when i tried to run them.

Do you have the latest (non-BETA) motherboard drivers installed? If these are malfunctioning, it could lead to corrupt data being read from the hard disk, although bad motherboard drivers would usually lead to a total boot failure.

Maybe your hard disk is on the fritz? Try this:
  1. Click the "Start Orb"
  2. Click "Computer"
  3. Right-click your C:, then select "Properties"
  4. Click the "Tools" tab
  5. Under "Error checking", click "Check Now" (You will need to respond to UAC)
  6. Make sure that "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" are checked.
  7. Click "Start"
  8. When the "Windows can't check the disk while it's in use" message pops up, click "Schedule disk check"
  9. Click "OK" on the Properties window
  10. Reboot
  11. Allow the disk scan to proceed without interruption.
Where any errors reported and fixed?

I was installing the drivers from the CD that came with the MB. I just realised they do say BETA on the CD :(

You may be on to a winner here!! I'll download all the latest versions from gigabyte website and do a fresh install with them all as the first thing I install. I think my current install of V64 is slightly corrupt :/

Thanks for the tip!

Also, I did chkdsks on boot for c: and D: using the method you said, which took hours. Both had no errors.

Many games are not compatible with 64bit. You may have to go back to XP or buy games that say Vista compatible, right on the box.

Well COD4, COD:WAW and Crysis Warhead are all definately Vista compatible. So they should work just fine.

I think I'm gonna start fresh again (oh well) and this time use the correct MB drivers. I can't believe I missed that the first time round.

By the way, what's the best order for installing drivers and windows updates. Do the drivers first (chipset, SATA, video, LAN, audio) then start on the windows updates? Or do the updates first?

Thanks.

SATA drivers will happen in the Vista install.
I then do MBoard drivers first...all others...then Windows updates.

Do you have AHCI enabled? I've had mixed results with it from working perfectly to being unable to run setup at all. Try turning it off in your BIOS settings and see if things work better. After you get a stable installation, make an image and then try turning it back on. If it craters at that point, at least you have a way to get back to a working system.

Well, I formatted and re-installed Vista64. I then installed the latest chipset drivers from the gigabyte website for my p35-ds4 1.0.

The package says version: 8.3.1.1009 IntelINF

When I run the package it installs but some of the drivers are version 8.3.1.1003 (P35 driver) according to device manager still :/ Particularly PCI controller. Others are version 1014 for the ICH9R chip. Is the driver not updating?? very confusing.

I then installed COD4, and it crashes as soon as I try to load a map in the same spot it was crashing before. UGH :(

I'm running out of ideas.

Do you have AHCI enabled?

No. It's disabled in BIOS.

I use same set up as you except CPU, mine works OK on games,

I use quad 6600 CPU.

Make of it what you will but I'd suspect CPU.

Another thought whats your PSU.

Well, this is gonna sound silly, but you should try making sure that your graphics card(s), ram and cpu are all fitted into your computer properly and carefully, i had exactly the same problem with almost exactly the same games, becasue my seccond Gig ram wasn't fitted in properly!!:geek:

My Computer

Could also be a video card issue.... remove the sound card firstr, try to load the game...if it runs and does not crash, then it is the sound card (May have gone bad)
