Vista 64 bit vs. 32 bit

I have just order 64 bit with my new PC on the advice of the salesman. 6g Ram seems plenty. But am I headed for ongoing trouble with 64 bit and compatability (drivers, software, antivirus, hardware)? Any thoughts?

Hello TonyGoo,
I run x64 Vista Ultimate and can recommend it, you will not have any trouble with run of the mill software but you may have a problem if you are thinking about running older/specialist software.
Driver support in general is good. I have never had a problem obtaining a driver.
6 Gig of Ram will give you an excellent experience with x64 Vista
It would have to be old hardware not to be supported by x64 Vista, if it's that old then best not to use it, lol.
You will always have people who have had a bad experience of x64 Vista and bad mouth it, or are very negative, but then, if you look back you will find that is true of all OS's.
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on, good luck.

I think stiney-nutz has pritty much said it all.
Dont forget that some software, even games are now optimised for 64bit programs.
The older hardware that you can not obtain drivers for will not be of any use.
Bare in mind that not all printers and scanners are supported on 64bit and some of the specialist hardware may be a bit of a hasstle to get to work.
If you have any problems then post in the drivers section.
We have provided an exclusive links page to all the major manufacturers in the drivers forum.
64bit is definetly the way to go, I have never had any problems with software that I have wanted to keep, a couple of old programs did give me a bit of jip but I got them to work or aquired a similar product that did the same thing and did work.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks guys. Feeling more comfortable about my purchase order. I pick it up tomorrow and was contemplating telling them I want 32 bit.

But to what extent do I need to look specifically for 64 bit compatability. eg. I am told that internet security software can be a hastle. I cant even see any reference to 64/32 bit on the side of the Nortons box. If no reference should I assume it is the 32 bit reference - or might compatability be a problem?

Don't worry about that. I use the free version of Avast on all of my OSes and have had no problems.

Most, if not all Security software is now optimised for x32-x64 bit, it will soon tell you when you load it if it's not compatible, but i don't think you will have any problems.
If you want to be sure just pop over to their website and take a look, it will have all the info you need there.
