I changed OS's and am now running Vista 64 bit and my old reliable HP Scanjet 4200c will not work with this OS. I need a flatbed scanner for scanning documents to fax and color photos. I am only an occasional user for home use.

You'll need to look at HP's website to see if they have drivers for that scanner. To be honest, I doubt they will.

PS, just went to HP's website (Select your operating system*) for your scanner, no deal for vista drivers :(

As to recommendations, I've always liked Epson, and, they have pretty good driver support. I have two Epson printers (Stylus Photo 2200 & Stylus Photo R800) between 5-7 years old, and an Epson scanner (Perfection 2400) that's about 6 years old, and Epson had Vista 64-bit drivers for them. That's pretty good support to me.

Which ever scanner you get, do your research first. Look for the scanner you want, then check to see if manufacture has 64-bit drivers for the scanner.

Good luck

Thanks...HP, as you say, no longer supports the Scanjet 4200c. I'll look for another scanner.

I have a Epson (perfection1660)I continualy go to the Epson site, but can only find a 32bit driver, please! where did you find the 64bit for the perfection series.

Guys, don't throw your old scanners away just because there's no 64-bit driver for them. All you might need to do is buy a copy of VueScan from Hamrick Software and use his internal driver. This is what I did to get my ancient Umax 1200S (SCSI, with an "unsupported" Adaptec SCSI adapter, haha) working with 64-bit Ultiimate. Works great. VueScan is an excellent piece of work with all the features you could want for your scanner. Highly recommended.

Here - Epson America, Inc. - Support - Highlights, Epson's Vista Compatibility page. Just look up your product, and if the 64-bit drivers are available, they'll show. I looked up the Perfection 1660 and unfortunately, no 64-bit drivers listed.

Sorry :(

As far as I remember, yes - but bear in mind I bought my product in 2001, and each subsequent release has (use to?) been free. You'll have to check the site though. I will say the price has gone up since I intially bought it.

Just looked it up, 1 year free upgrades = $39 Dollars
Unlimited upgrades = $79 Dollars

VueScan Scanning Software - Make sure you read the list of supported scanners.

The standard edition is $40, the pro edition is $80. If you're only doing normal scanning and don't need extras like exotic color calibration and profiles, the standard edition ought to be fine for you. I have the standard edition -- it does everything I've ever needed.

VueScan has an unregistered mode that you can use for free. It puts some sort of mark in the image. You can easily tell if it will work for you before paying.

Note that while VueScan is a good integrated scanning application, it does not provide a TWAIN driver and thus other applications won't work with your scanner even with VueScan.
