Video playback issues

I don't know where to put this, and it is really really creating a problem for me.

I just upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate x64. All my programs run well except for one thing: Video playback is garbled.

I can't watch any video. I can't encode any video. I can't scrub or edit any video without Quicktime, Premiere Pro CS3 or even VLC crashing. All video plays for a few seconds, emits a large burst of static and then crashes the video player it sits in.

I have the following setup:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.67GHz
XFS GeForce 8600 GT
EVGA nForce 680i LT SLI Motherboard
2x1GB Mushkin DDR2 800MHz SDRAM

Can anybody help me figure this out? Its my work machine (used for video) and I really need to get some projects out the door. If this can't be remedied, I need to revert to XP. This problem has been going on for almost two days on a fresh install of Vista...

The first thing you'll need to do is download and install Vista x64 drivers for all your hardware devices, specifically in this case you sound and display hardware.

Then you'll also need to get the proper codecs installed, which you can get here - Vista Codec Package Homepage. Download both the x86 and x64 versions. If you still experience problems after installing the x64 codecs (which your x86 programs might not be able to use), then install the x86 codecs.

Try downloading and installing Vista updates (if available) for your Premiere and VLC also.

Everything has been updated (driver-wise) prior to the video issues. But, I did find that it had to do with the file being played and not the application playing it. Stupid me.

The .mov file I was playing must have had some bad mojo in it because it would kill anything it was played in. I was running out of time to get the video encoded correctly so I passed it off to a coworker to make an .flv out of it. Guess what? The same explosion of static and frame drops occured on his XP Pro system as well.

How did this file get this way? It was fine before when I had it on my XP system. Oh well... Luckily, I found the original version and it encoded on my Vista box problem-free. Thanks for the response, though.
