Video Card/ driver help

I am a bit lost, but trying to fix my friends computer. Thought he just had some crazy virus, but I think it is a driver problem, or a failing video card. Not real good with Vista, so here I am.

He told me it was powering down within 5 minutes of booting up. I have had it up over 24 hours atm. However, the VGA input does not display my monitor. It "detects" it, as I hear a noise when I plug it in, but no display. For some video game, he has a DVI to VGA adapter. This allows me to get my monitor to work on his 2 DVI outputs. He also has an s-video output, but short of my televisions in another room, I dont have anything s-video to test it on. Is there and driver that controls just the VGA input, can his video card be failing but still have the other 2 inputs (not counting the s-video, which is unchecked) be failing, or is it a "broken" VGA input (pins loose inside, or connection problem)

Just want to know if there is any fix before I crack it open and start poking around.

Thanks a lot, hope everyone is not too bloated from all the turkey yesterday!

Hi,

From what you have said: -

  1. What investigations have you done for virus/ malware?
  2. I am not sure if you actually see anything when the card is connected to the display.
  3. Are you saying the "Pins loose inside, or connection problem" is a fact?
  4. Have you tried the other ports (VGA & s-video) on your TV?
So, what are the real symptoms & facts? Make, model, Vista version (SP) & Video drivers if you can etc.

PS. I'm not so "Bloated" as I'm in UK.

I feel real good about the virus/malware bit. I have run combofix, avira, and malware antibytes, and cleaned it up pretty well imo. I was just trying to save the time of opening up the box if I didn't have to. The VGA external connector is "loose", I do not feel it is seating properly. The DVI ports both work fine. This is a gateway GT5662, and I can seem to find out if the VGA output could be cooked, but the video card/other outputs could be fine. It seems to me that the VGA input is "broken" but since the other 2 I tried(the DVI's) are fine, and are several inches (or cms for my limey friend :p) I am leaning toward the fact the video card is fine, his drivers are fine, and the VGA input has a pin broken somewhere inside, so I am just going to tell him to use the DVI to VGA converter, and carry on. That seems to me to be the cheapest and easiest fix.

Hope I explained it better, happy Friday to all my UK friends.

UP CITY!

OK,

From what you have said there, it seems reasonable to say it will carry on working (For now anyway) with the other outputs.

Just be "Prepared" for it not working.

If the VGA port is "Disturbed" the card could become "Fried" from the poor connections etc. etc.

As for the other stuff, time will tell..............

Actually...... Your vga port will never work...... You have an onboard and a standalone card.

You can only run 1 card at a time, aka the stand alone one, thus the vga port on the onboard is disabled.
The 2 dvi and s-video are the only ones activated. So he has to dvi to vga adapter it.

So theres nothing wrong at all.
