Very weird sound from HP Laptop, Vista 32

Hello everybody,
I had this problem a long time ago, I don't know why my laptop has it, it was some sound like a sigh, appearing about 6, 7 times and then off, and then it appears again. I attached an external HDD 1TB from SeaGate, is this one make my laptop runs over limited?
I use Vista 32 bit, service pack 2, Memory 3Gb, Hard drive 250 GB, Firefox, IE8, Opera 10. My laptop is HP Pavilion dv2910us
Please help me fix this problem, everything else is good, I can hear music very clearly.
Just only those weird sound.

As a first measure right click on the speaker next to the clock, go to sounds and set it to "no sounds" (next to "save as" in the middle of the little window). If that does not help, it can only come from the mobo or it is the disk chafing.

I followed your instruction but it does not work. I do not let any disk in my drive, just only the external HDD 1TB , is there another way to fix?

2. And what is that supposed to mean " I do not let any disk in my drive "?
3. We will only be able to fix it once we know the cause of the problem, and that we don't know. It is hard to diagnose a sound on the internet. Maybe you can record it and post it.

I did check:" No sound" like you told me to do.
Any disk means I did not put any DVD, CD in my DVD Rom.
Could you tell me how can I record that sound and sending it to you?

Since this is not a sound that manifests itself thru the speakers, you need to record it with a little tape recorder. Then you can get it into the system like that: ( Converting audio cassette tapes to CD, MP3 and other digital formats ). Once you have a file (no need to convert it to .mp3. You can leave it in .wav), you upload it to e.g. Skydrive and post the link. From there we can download the file and listen to it.
Before you upload it, make sure the sound can be heard from the file - just play it.

PS: The chafing of the disk I was talking about has nothing to do with the CDs. I referred to the HDD disk.

Hi Joe, This is weird indeed. I have never heard anything like that coming from a computer. It sounds like a car engine revving up. But I don't have the faintest idea what that could be. I will listen to it a few more times - maybe something comes to mind.

Yes, you are right as describing what those sound are. It happened a long time ago, nearly a year. I don't know where it comes from. Even though I tried to plug out the external HDD, that problem is still there.

It sure sounds like something mechanical. There are 3 candidates - the disk, the fan or the CD drive. The last I would exclude because you are not running it but the other two run all the time.
Just to make sure it does not come from the "outside", I suggest you unplug everything including internet and power (run on battery). If the sound is still there, you will have to consult with HP because a mechanical problem we cannot solve over the net. I would send a note to their technical service and attach the sound file. I know HP service is not the greatest, but other than that, you only have the option to go to a local PC shop.

No problem. Sorry we could not fix it on the spot. It was one of the weirdest problems I have ever seen - the other one was an "unlimited" setting of the Vista shadowstorage.
