Using UDF media

Howard Kaikow

Vista Pro
On a Windows 2000 system, I created a CD-RW thatr uses the UDF 1.02 file system.

How does one use such media in Vista?
I thought that Vista had the built-n capability to read/write UDF formats.

Howard Kaikow:

You may need to change a setting.

In your Video folder, click on Burn. Then click the arrow to open up
Show formatting options. Live file system should be ticked. Click on
Change version. Next to UDF Version, change from default to the lowest numbered version and try your UDF/RW.

If you aren't going to be working with older systems in the future, you might want to convert your data over to the Vista default version.

Let us know if this helps.

Edit: According to the literature, Vista should work with all versions of
UDF so long as Live File system is selected.

You might be missing the ISO file system. Look here:

Why Won't my DVD Play?

Thanx for pointing me to that article, but that was not my entire problem, I'll decribe my problem in another post.

Let me tell you who I am.
I was one of the designers of the High Sierra format, ISO 9660, and ISO/IEC 13346 (the basis for UDF), and the, in effect defunct, ISO/IEC 13490 (but this is where multisession was actually defined).

It upsets me to see articles that include significant misstatements about the relevant standards, but I can no longer take the time to offer corrections.

Please take care when reading articles that purport to explain these standards.
I do not even recall the last time I saw such an article that did not have errors.

Hey Howard, you are a dummy!

I realize that you have had the Vista system for a bit over a year, and that you have not been using it to create optical media.

If you check, you will find that the drive that came with the Vista notebook will write CD-R and DVDs, but NOT CD-RW. I guess that, at some point, you must have known that, but as one ages, brain cells wear out.

Of course, Vista, an dthge software supplied with the notebook, does not use a UDF format prior to UDF 1.50, and your Windows 2000 CD-RW drive can read, but not write, that format using Roxio's Drag 2 Disc 7.1.0.189. Not worth updating the software on the Windows 2000 desktop, is it?
