Well, I guess I kinda deserved this one, but there still maybe hope. I was trying to free up space on my partitioned C drive by moving my user profile (C:\Users\Matthew) to F:\Users\Matthew and then using a NTFS Junction with the mklink cmd. Two files were stuck in the old user profile so I moved all the files back to C (all of these operations were done using a second admin account). Trying to log back into my regular account at first gave me a temp profile and the log pointed to an event 1542 (User Profile Service) error - It didn't give me a bubble telling me that it failed to load my profile correctly, just the error message in event viewer,
After rebooting, my vista account would instantly log me out. After entering the password, welcome flasshes for two seconds, then it says logging out. 20 seconds of black screeen with a frozen cursor and I am back at the login screen.
So... My account loads successfully in safemode, but not in standard more. Both the built in Admin and my other admin account (used for attempting the move) work in both modes. I have spent hours looking into common registry issues that most people describe with this.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-4211479757-2833760250-3217603951-XXXX is not labeled .bad or .bak, refcount is 0 and state is 0.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Userinit is correct and so is shell.
one thread pointed me towards
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4211479757-2833760250-3217603951-XXXX
The instructions pointed to a microsoft FixIt app, and a few KB articles, but the articles didn't sound like my problem and the fixIt app (which did sound similar to my issue) did not resolve the issue. Something about loading a hive... (not sure if it was my lack of understanding or less than optimal instructions.
Anyone had this before?
Where can I find what the difference is between a safeboot and standard boot login in terms of processes and services? (I have checked my services and startups using msconfig but there is nothing eroneus or viral like.)
I enabled auditing of my logins, both success and failures but where exactly am I going to find the logs or results of that audit?
I would love some help or even a possible solution.
I can cut my losses and make a new account and transfer everything over, but I am worried about what kind of application issues that might cause (any?)
Thanks.
TLDR: I messed up. Account works in safemode not std mode. No windows recover option. Registry seems normal.
