Solved Use of internal hdd exclusively for movie storeage

Greetings all,

I have two internal hdd's of 750GB each. One is divided into a small start up partition of 100GB that houses my C: or system OS; and D: for music, pics and documents.

The second hdd is also divided into two partitions. The E: partition is about 570GB and has been empty until now, and F: houses a Windows Image Backup of my OS.

I have decided to use F: for movie storage.

My question is rather simple, namely, will Windows be loading the movies stored on F: at every start up?

I do not see why they would not. If you decide to put your movies on F they should remain there. If you have something in mind that I am not thinking about please advise. If you put your docments on the C drive with the OS and you have several other drives they do not move after boot. I have everything on my C drive. I also, have a backup drive. I have been using my OS for over a year now and everything remains where I put them. It would cause quite a problem if programs and files moved at every start up. Hope this helps.
Again, if either through experience or by knowing something that I am not including in my thought process, please post and explain.
That being said, there is alway the possiblity of having unforseen problems, like this unfortunate person with XP.

Hi cx2s,

Do you plan to store movies on F: in a regular folder and access them when you need them or are you planning to move the Videos folder from your user profile? If the former, then it's no big deal though I recommend if it isn't already the case, you take ownership of F: drive and give yourself full rights permissions. If the latter, you can't just move it like a regular folder. To function properly, since it is a shell folder (which is why it is shaded green instead of beige like most other folders), there is a special procedure for moving it. I agree with everything stated by Lorien, especially the part about permissions and ownership. That is why I gave you a link as that problem was the crux of the scenario expalined in that link.. So now warned twice, be cautious. Good luck

I am aware that what is saved to a hdd does not 'move around' at start up.

My concern was saving several hundred's of gigabytes of movies to an internal hdd when I only will access them a couple of times a week.

I didn't think it wise to put an unnecessary 'strain' on my pc's resources. However to have an empty 750GB drive is a waste.

Evidentally these movies are important to you. You can back them up if you have any concern about therir safety. Important files should be backed up regardless of the situation.

You are right, the movies are important to me. I like choosing what films I watch.

I find saving them to a hdd makes them easier to access. If I had to search for the dvd of a film I wanted to see..... well, I just can't see myself doing that if I didn't have to.

Simply having them stored on an internal hard drive is not putting a strain on your computer's resources - merely taking up space. Their existence on the drive does not affect RAM or memory or running processes or almost anything other than tasks involving maintenance of or changes to the drive (like backups if you want to do them or AV scans or defragmentations or clean-ups or creating restore points or things like that - or, of course, actually accessing and using the files there as in watching a video). If you have some other programs tracking or periodically updating a video catalog or something like that, then those programs will use system resources (but no more so than would occur if the files were on an external hard drive - the fact that it is an internal hard drive is of no consequence to that).
