USB Printer Problem

My Brother 2070 USB printer suddenly quit printing. I assumed that it was a printer problem, and bought a new USB Brother 2240 today. After carefully installing it according to the directions, it won't print either. I can see the printer in Device Manager, and the printer status applets show the printer, but when I send a document or test page, it just hangs (showing the status "Deleting - sent to printer"), but the printer doesn't print. Device manager shows the printer, with the status "This device is working properly", and the USB Printer Support shows up under the USB Controllers tree, also with the status "This device is working properly". I'm running Vista Home Premium 64bit, with tons of RAM (8 GB), with a MSI P7N mb, and an Intel q9400 Quad 4 CPU. Everything else seems to be working OK. I have a ticket open with the Brother people, but can't talk to them until Monday.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a followup on my earlier post. I have since concluded that the problem lies with the print spooler, not USB or printer drivers. When I set my printer to "print directly to printer" rather than "spool print documents...", the document printed fine. I've stopped and restarted the print spooler service to no avail, so now I'm searching for a way to repair the spooler service.
