Which happens to be a few threads down from you. That I think gives details of the releases generally.
They would, and have done release updates at other times for emergency patches to fix something.
The routine updates are as the link explains, and the sub-links from it too.
You may have noticed in the past few days NICK ADSL UK name around the forum.
He is the author of the monthly releases.
I'm sure if you want more info the expert will give you the information you require.

Hello!

The 2nd Tuesday of each month is called Patch Tuesday. For the most part, Microsoft accumulates all updates until this date, however, they will relase early any updates which they feel patch vulnerabilities which need to be patched NOW, and not later. Also, Microsoft Security Essentials updates will be released once or twice a day, although MSE should auto-install these.
