unable to install Vista

Hi i m trying to install vista and i get this error message:

I have a partition of 40.8 GB for installing vista. I m using a 80 GB hard drive.
Please help

Hi Dinesh. Judging by your screenshot, you're doing this out of Win7. That error can mean the active partition is hidden so Vista setup doesn't "see" it.

How was the system partition created?

Yes this is a desktop which had windows xp (FAT32). Unfortunately, i do not have the windows vista bootable disk. So i had to first install windows 7 and then once i reached the desktop, i put the windows vista dvd and run the cd. When i click on Install Now, i get this error. I use the same trick to install vista on my laptop and it works fine.

I have no reason to suspect that the Win7 step is part of the problem; I was just curious to know the installation sequence.

The most probable explanation for the error remains a hidden active (system) partition. It may have been that way for a long time without any particular ill effect - until the attempt to install Vista.

Did you actually blow away the old FAT32 partition from within the Win7 installer, or are you trying to install Vista on an old, existing FAT32 partition?

I have already deleted all the partitions and installed Win 7 on a new single partition of 80 GB. Still it shows the same thing. When i followed a tutorial from MS and marked my C partition as ACTIVE in diskmgmt.msc, i restarted the system and got BOOTMGR is missing. Hence i ran startup repair and booted to desktop again.

Hi Rive and H2SO4, thanks for the replies but i fixed this issue by entering WIN RE and thru command prompt, i turned the partition to Not Hidden and now Vista is able to see the partition and i m able to install Vista.

Happy to hear it's working Dinesh.

I'm curious how the partition got flipped to "hidden" to begin with. Presumably some interaction with the win7 installer that would be interesting to understand.

But now as i have installed vista, i have deleted the windows.old folder in C:\ but i can still see the 200 MB partition which Win 7 created during setup. Should i delete it? I m scared it should not interfere in the Vista Boot process. What do you say?

The 200MB partition is the boot partition for 7.
