Unable To Burn CD-R. Laptop Fights Me Every Step.

Using royalty-free music and Homestar Runner "Quotes Of The Week" I have created music tracks for my own entertainment, but alas no matter what I do, my laptop refuses to burn them with Windows Media Player, and will literally fight me every step of the way. Here are problems as they can happen (in chronological order):

1. The disc will eject a blank CD-R and tell me to insert a blank CD-R. I have used multiple CD-Rs to no avail. I have even tried on another computer (wondering if perhaps it was something wrong with the hardware on my laptop) but the same thing happens on the second computer.

2. It will tell me that the disc was unable to be formatted.

3. If I can somehow nudge it through the previous two issues, it will burn the CD-R but sometimes will just fail halfway telling me there's an error (though this happened once and I cant' remember what number error code).

4. If, by some miracle, I can get past all three issues, it WILL burn onto the CD-R. Only problem? The laptop will play my CD . . . but it won't play on any other portable music system.

Am I just completely clueless how to burn music files on a Vista? Or have I somehow been cursed with an entire stack of bad CD-Rs?

If it helps any, all the files are .WAV.

I must be an idiot or something. I tried the top three and they ALL told me they couldn't burn onto a BLANK disc. I'm really confused by this...
