trying to add hard drive. help please

i have been searching everywhere and need some help. i have an older maxtor 250gb ide hard drive and i am trying to put it in my computer so i can reformat it and install vista ultimate, the thing is when i go to disk manager i can see the drve, feel the drive, but it wont let me initialize it or anything, it comes up as "the request could not be performed because of an I/O devise error, the disk was originally in my modded xbox and i could acces it with xp. please help as i have 1 gig left on my seagate 600g and i need more room. thanks in advance

I just put an old IDE HD in an old computer to install Linux. I almost forgot to check the jumper settings. Have you checked this? The jumper will need to be set @ slave (or master) depending on what you're doing. Good luck - hope this helps.

Does your drive show up in computer? If so try right clicking on it, click on properties, click on the tools tab, click on Check Now accept the UAC prompt make sure there is a tick in both boxes and click on start.

ya but it says i can go to help properties or initialize disk but it comes up with an error when i try to initialize it. i found out how to jump it as a slaveon the maxtor sight, i will try that and update. thank you

as a rule a HDD is a HDD so it shouldnt make a difference
Try what I wrote before for computer, you said it allowed you right click and to select properties.
Is your other drive SATA or IDE?

One way to ensure the jumpers are correct is to enter Setup/bios. Depending on your machine, it's F2 or Esc or Del while booting. Usually a brief screen prompt tells you how.

Once in Setup, click the various tabs, there are only a few, to find the list of drives. If the jumpers and cables are correct, it should be there. If not listed, you will probably need to change something, motherboard port, jumper, cable, something.
