Hi,

Since October 2008 (the first time I installed TomTom Home) I have exactly the same problem in spite of the version of the program. The 1st and 2nd echelons of TomTom helpdesk offered me a lot of possible solutions, but none was a real solution.

It is remarkable, but sometimes the program starts normally without the error. This is in 1 percent of all the attempts to start up the program and unpredictable.

The last TomTom helpdesk message (December 2008) says the experts of TomTom gave in.

My previous personel Computer (XP-SP3 and the same other software) has no problems to start TomTom Home.

I have tried everything: cleaning folders and register from old versions of TomTom Home, installing and/or start-up the program without firewall and virusscanner, using administrator rights, clossing all programs in the background etc.

I'am using a brandnew machine with the most updated drivers and software.

It is remarkable that the TomTom helpdesk tells me that I am the only person who reports this problem. Now I see another person with the same error and in contact with the TomTom helpdesk.

Are more people with the same TomTom Home error in Vista?

My Computer

Just so you know you are not alone! I have the same problem as you with TomTom Home ... and have suffered this for many months. I can get it to work after about 10 - 20 attempts, which means I can upgrade my maps etc (eventually!)

TomTom absolutely refuse to admit there is a problem .... and I have now given up with their so called "experts" as they do not read my emails and only give stock answers that have nothing to do with the question.

I asked TomTom about the point in having the error code and asking us to send it to them, if they then don't know what it means!
They never give a direct answer except to imply that we (the customer) are the only one suffering this problem and give the impression they would like us to please go away.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, cleaned the registry, and everything else known to mankind....Nothing works!

I now use my laptop to update my Satnav which runs the same Vista setup but without the errors on TomTom Home.
I wish you luck if you try to persevere with TomTom, but don't hold your breath.

Rodger.

LOL yes that is excatly right, sometimes it will work, but then it will stop working. I too have given up with them, all I want is a PREVIOUS version of the software but NO ONE can even give me that.

DOES ANYONE have the 2.4 setup which I can somehow download, as 2.5 has obviously got issues.

Thanks, Ben :)

For what it's worth, I have just downloaded Home 2.5 and though the program starts fine on the computer, my TomTom freezes when I try to restart it after I update it on the computer. It never did that before this.
Server100, where did you go to get tech support? I think maybe no one is reporting problems 'cause their tech support site is well hidden :p or maybe I'm missing it?

Hi Peppurr101,

It is not so easy to contact the TomTom helpdesk. They are really hidden for their customers. Click on the following link and follow the instructions. It is the link to the English language page. If you like another language, you can change the language in the right top of the webpage. In the Dutch language webpage, which I used, you will unfortunaltely read a lot of irrelevant FAQ (many pages) before you reach the e-mail possibility to contact the helpdesk with your specific question. I suppose the same in the other language webpages to prevent many contacts with the helpdesk.

I got the following error message upon startin tomtom home 2.5
Component returned failure code: 0x80004005

I read it had something to do with the my documents folder.
In vista I had the My Documents folder (in the start menu) pointed to a seperate hard drive (H:) instead of the default C:\Users\Username\Documents
After changing the My documents folder to default again, tomtom home started fine.

My Computer

I get exactly the same error (Component returned failure code: 0x80004005) but my Documents folder is pointing to the right place on the C drive and Home will not work all the time.

Everyone seems to have the same problem but with a different solution, and some like me with no solution at all ...... and no help from TomTom.

My laptop has the same setup as my desktop system and TomTom Home works fine on the Laptop but refuses to work on the desktop.
My brother has the same problem on his desktop system and TomTom basically told him the same as me...."we can find nothing wrong. It should work"

Their first suggestion for a fix didn't work for me but might work for some of you out there, so if you want to give it a try, this is their answer.

---------------------------------------
- Uninstall TomTom HOME

- Delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\TomTom HOME 2
C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\TomTom
C:\Users\USER_NAME\My Documents\TomTom
C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\TomTom

- Reboot your PC

- Download TomTom HOME from TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems and save it on your desktop

- Right-click on that file and run it as Administrator

We have all the same failure code. I asked TomTom help desk the explanation (translation or meaning) of this code. In spite of my repeated requests TomTom help desk never give that explanation. Why not? Something to hidden?

I concluded the program TomTom Home is not Vista-Proof. All their suggestions for a fix were not helpful and most of them I had invented by myself before. Their suggestions for a fix testify to little knowledge of the problem and the error code.

TomTom helpdesk told me that my problem is a pc-machine-related problem and advised me to use another PC. I have a brand new machine with a Quad-core processor (October 2008) with the most updated and advanced software. All installed programs (more than 80 freeware and paid software) work fine. The only exeption is TomTom Home. The suggestion changing machine is ridiculous. It seems me TomTom doesn't care their customers.

Talked to TomTom today and escalated seeing as how people have been having this problem for so many years with so many different versions of their product. Apparently, this is a generic code that is spit out whenever TomTom has no clue what went wrong so no one fix will work for everyone. To add insult to injury, they will not troubleshoot with a customer, they only want to deal with the log that errors out when the program tries to send it. Its no wander they don't think they have a problem. I for one find their customer service completely unacceptable and will give them no more of my money. The unit may be good but is utterly useless without regular access to updates. I'll find one from a nice American or Chinese company that still remembers customers keep them floating. The Europeans call us Americans ugly but my treatment by these yoyo's while trying to repair my 3 month old $600 brick was atrocious. The employee and supervisor would have been fired on this side of the pond.:sa::sarc:

My Computer

Yes I agree....It's a shame the product is so good and yet they are so bad with their customers. I am still having problems more than six months later and their support team have no idea how to fix it. If I was as bad in my job I would have been fired within a week!

In case it helps, I have listed their possible fixes....none of which work for me. But they might help someone else.
Please be aware that the following is suggested by TomTom, not me...and I can't be responsible for anyone screwing up their system, so proceed with caution!

TomTom say:
A possible workaround has been provided by the 2nd Line Support Team, to resolve the reported challenge with using/installing TomTom HOME to your computer.
The workaround is to create a new profile in windows, with full administrator rights and to disable UAC (User Account Control).

Once the new profile has been created, follow the steps below to disable the UAC:

- Enter the Control Panel and type UAC in the search box.
- User Accounts >>Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.>>Click on it and the UAC window will open.
- Deselect the option "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" and press the OK button.
- You will be asked to restart the computer. After the restart, UAC will be disabled >> reinstall TTHOME.

TomTom also say:
We believe that the problem may be caused by DEP (Data Execution Prevention, a security feature included in Vista). Would you disable this feature and try again to run TomTom HOME?

To disable DEP in Vista:

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.

You may also to choose to turn off DEP for a single program only. Via the following link you'll find further information on this;

Hi,

I have been looking into this issue as I have the same problem.

Basically, if you have your documents folder in a partitioned drive then it confuses Tomtom program.

I have got mine to work now by uninstalling it from the user account I use and installing it on the guest account that I haven't changed the "Documents" folder path.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the partitioned drive on my HD to be recognised by vista as my documents folder!

Any ideas?
