"To continue type an administrative password then click Ok"

Russ Mullin here,

Hello there:

This is what I'm trying to do in my HP Desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium..this desktop needs a a wireless adapter to access the router I have set up 30 feet away. When I insert the Setup CD to install the software to use my Belkin Wireless Adapter I get the message Sorry! Please Run as Administrator...next when I try to access the Administrator from the cmd prompt in the start window---then right click on the cmd prompt in Program/Run as Administrator I get the following Window with this message:

User Account Control
[Shield icon] windows needs your permission to continue
If you started this action, continue
[CMD icon] Windows Command Processor
Microsoft Windows
To continue, type an administrative password, then click OK

PROBLEM*****THERE IS NO SPACE OR WINDOW TO TYPE IN PASSWORD
QUESTION*****HOW DO I TYPE IN PASSWORD IN ORDER TO MOVE FORWARD?
or is there an alternative fix that will allow me to install these drivers etc that will allow me to complete the install thereby activating the new Belkin Wireless adapter?

Thanks
Russ Mullin

Since it's basically trying to set up wireless I'd ask the mod to move the post into networking and sharing.
More chance people there have had your problem and worked around it/solved it.

Welcome to Vista Forums.

To avoid a lot of Q & A about your hardware and OS configuration, please click on this link to
Edit System Specs

Filling this out, at least partially, will save a lot of time. Another advantage is when posting a new problem, the person answering can just click the My System Specs link in the bottom of your post. No need to search for the information.

If you have multiple systems just indicate that in the System Specs so that we know why many of the fields are blank.

Hello townsbg:

Your Reply: Do you have a button that says ok or continue to click on?

I have not seen the "continue button" I have seen two OK buttons.
1.) One comes up when I attempt to install the drivers from the Belkin CD....
one can see it in my attachment, Screen #4
2.) The other OK button is grayed out and I cannot even get it to Prt sc or
appear as a ctrl V into a word document, see Screen #5 and 6.
a) The OK button is grayed out, so I can't even access it.
b) Where it asks me to type in the Admin password----that box is not
to be found...there is no place visible to type in password.....
c) So it is right here that I get stopped dead in my tracks....I cannot get
access to type in the Admin Password so I can proceed.
3.) So the above is my problem...what do you recommend?

You need to log in with an Administrator account - Standard Users cannot install drivers.
The problem is that if the Admin account doesn;t have a password, it's locked out from being used by a standard user.

Good morning and thanks NoelDP....I will go in and make that adjustment...however yesterday in cmd mode and following another thread recommendation off of Utube I went in and typed into the cmd prompt the following [net user administrator] and it came back MOM...this computer belongs to my wife and daughters, I seldom if ever get on it and I know just enough IT to be dangerous...my investigation tells me my eldest daughter, she is away at school, set my wife [MOM] as the administrator...but evidently only as a Standard administrator...so know I need to find out who is the real or where is is the Admin Account? How would I go about this task? That is locating the Admin Account? Thanks...I'm on my way outthe door to drop mu youngest at school will be back in 30 minute...

There is NO NEED to access the full default Administrator account - unless no ordinary Admin accounts are available and working.

Simply logging into the normal Admin accounts will allow proper elevation with sufficient privileges to allow installation of software and drivers.

There are two other accounts on this computer, both of those users are in school until noon CST, I can't access those accounts until I get those passwords for each account...then I will be able to see which one is the Admin account [if any] as we have already eliminated "MOM" as not being the account we are looking for.

My Computer

MOM should be the one you need - log in to that one and check in the Control Panel Users page

Just to expand on that - it looks to me as if the MOM account is the default Administrator account renamed - which is VERY dangerous practice, if so.

Here's the output from my nachine for the NET USER ADMINISTRATOR command

Thanks Again NoelDP for your assistance:

Right now I'm unsure of your request "MOM should be the one you need - log in to that one and check in the Control Panel Users page" ...I did what you asked {I think?}...here is the attachment of the actions and results....
Up to screen #5 I can perform any of these tasks...once on Screen #5 I need permission to perform the task...if there is a Shield to the left of the description of the corresponding task I can't get beyond that point.
Screen's 6,7,8 I can perform any task without being stopped out. In Screen #10, again I'm blocked out from installing the drivers.
Now I'm not sure if any of the above is relevant to what you requested I do...as you can see I'm a little bit at a lose so I'm just taking stabs....
Questions #1.) Am I on the right track or process...do I need to rename a user?
#2.) I can't seem to get past this "MoM' account
#3.) What steps did I need to perform to arrive at the correct Admin
account?
#4.) Do you need a screen print of the NET USER ADMINISTRATOR like
the one you provided in tour last thread? If so what is it that I should
be looking for...compared to yours... what text or points should match
match up?

Thanks

Try running the command
NET LOCALGROUP ADMINISTRATORS

that will list all Administrator accounts by 'friendly name'
