The Sims 2

I just purchased a brand new Dell laptop with Vista, and whenever I try to create a new family, it will freeze.
It will also freeze/stop loading when
-I try and load some households
-I go downtown
And sometimes, I will completely load a household, but the screen (minus the control panel) will be black, and the music will be playing, but nothing will show up.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled many times, and this still happens.
I played these games on my old computer and this never happened.
Help!!!

The Sims 2 was not originally created to run on Vista and is more of an XP game. Some people do have issues with it freezing up on Vista, though I have yet to have that issue since I bought the deluxe version with all the patches already applied to the game.

You may want to visit the Sims website and see if any patches are available for download and apply them if they are. Barring that, right clicking on short cut for the Sims and selecting the compatibility tab and selecting XP SP2 may help resolve the issues.

We also need your system specifications. Simply telling us you have the trashcan 2000 (Dell) doesn't really indicate the type of system you have. If you do not have enough RAM to play the game AND Vista, then the errors you described above can and will happen. Additionally, an incompatible graphics card can also cause these issues.

I'm having the exact same problem with freezing.

I absolutely have enough memory (it's a brand new computer with 4GB). I'm not completely sure how to check my graphics card, but I did follow someone else on the forum's advice and went from Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager -> Display adapters. If that is my graphics card then I have a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family.

Will I ever be able to play The Sims 2?

Also, I have the Sims 2 double Deluxe and Freetime. I downloaded the patches for Freetime, but it still freezes.

Re: The Sims + expansion packs

Hi

This is my first time logging into here...so here goes.

My son has just bought a Sony VAIO laptop running on Vista Home Premium - 3GB, 2.10ghz so it has a decent memory compared to our pc.

We have always managed to play all the Sims expansion packs (Unleashed, Hot Date, Makin Magic, Vacation, etc.) on our old XP machine.

On the new laptop, during installation, we keep receiving messages saying there is not enough memory. The discs will continue to install but we cannot open the game up.

Is this a compatibility problem with Vista or am I missing something. I must admit we're struggling to find the compatibility wizard. Its not in the same place as on XP.

The graphics card is Nividia GeForce

Many thanks for any help.

Laptops traditionally have mobile video cards - which share at least a part of their memory with the System memory. This could be the problem - unless you buy a laptop that is specifically *made* for gaming, you'll probably run into this a lot, as Vista *by itself* wants 3 GB of RAM to run.

However, there is a caveat: We need to know the *exact* error message on the laptop. A generic out of memory error can refer to 4-5 different things.

I too have Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family, and it appears I should upgrade according to earlier posts. Where and how do I do so? I have a feeling graphics is what is causing the Sims2 to freeze on my computer (after create a family, the neighborhood is black minus the controls, but it used to work for a while before freezing, now it always comes up black) I really need help, I want to play the sims2 so bad. :(

other info:
Intel Core 2 duo
vista 32bit whatever that means.
Dell inspiron 1525
RAM: 3.00 GB
Hard Drive: Started out with 250gb, plenty of room left.
Graphics: ok so i guess there are these weird ratings, it says desktop performance for windows aero: 3.4 and for Gaming graphics it says, 3d graphics and gaming performance: 3.5
While I'm at it, the base subscore rating for the computer is 3.4
(please only go into the ratings if you know a lot about them and if it is going to help me)

Thanks.

I know this game requires at least a GeForce 2 or a Radeon 7000 to run so it doesn't require much of a GPU to run. It may just be an integrated graphics problem or a Vista problem. I'm going to install this game again tomorrow on my system and see if I find any problems on my system and I'll report back if I find anything relevant. I'm kind of interested to see if I'll have any problems since I haven't installed this game since I made the switch to Vista.

Same problem. I bought The Sims 2 Deluxe for my laptop yesterday and it has been freezing whenever i finish creating a family. .
I did some research today and did a test at systemrequirementslab.com and now realise that my video card doesn't cut it - it's a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family. I also use Vista and my laptop make is a Dell Inspiron 1525. It's new as of this year. I've read that i can't upgrade my graphics card because i use a laptop...

And now for my main question: is there any way of getting around this?? How do i find a preferably light-on-the-pocket solution to this problem?? Is there a laptop-friendly Sims 2 version i could try?

My Computer

With that video card you would have freezing....try upgrading :p

not true.

THE SIMS (1 and 2) are notorious games for the fact that they mostly rely on your CPU, and not your graphics card.

Most processing is done by your CPU... so a PC with a good cpu but bad graphics card will be able to play it MUCH better than a pc with a bad cpu but a state-of-art graphics card.
